The Mittelberg is 803.5  m above sea level. NHN high mountain of the Thuringian Slate Mountains in the district of Sonneberg, Thuringia ( Germany ).

It is located southeast of Lichte in the Thuringian Forest Nature Park . The mountain forms the southeast slope of the Lichtetal. Neighboring mountains are the Apelsberg ( 785.3  m ) and the Rückersbiel ( 755.6  m ) in the west, the Hahnberg ( 686  m ) in the northwest and the Mutzenberg ( 769.6  m ) and the Rauhhügel ( 802  m ) in the north. To the south-west is the Arlsberg ( 780.5  m ) , part of the Eisenberg massif , which reaches the Rennsteig with hedgehog. The Finsterer Grund Viaduct stretches between the two mountains.

Mittelberg lies north of the Rennsteig and faces north. This makes it part of the Northern High Slate Mountains .

The Mittelberg is made up of slate from the deep Silurian . The key fossil is Phycodes circinatum , an Ichnofossil . The phycode schist of the Mittelberg has a high iron content.

The ascent from Lichte-Wallendorf begins at the church of Wallendorf am Kirchsteig and leads over the Kirchberg (688 m) in front of the mountain to the ridge at 803.5  m .
