The Apelsberg is 785.3  m above sea level. NHN high mountain of the Thuringian Slate Mountains in the district of Sonneberg , Thuringia ( Germany ).

It is located southwest of the Neuhausen district of Lichte in the Thuringian Forest Nature Park and forms the watershed in the source area of ​​the Lichte between the Ascherbach and the Kleine Licht . Neighboring mountains are the Rückersbiel ( 755.6  m ) in the west, the Hahnberg ( 686  m ) and the Mutzenberg ( 769.6  m ) in the north and the Rauhhügel ( 802  m ) and the Mittelberg ( 803.5  m ) in the east.

The Apelsberg is the northeasternmost branch of the Eisenberg massif . The Rennsteig runs on the south side of the mountain . The ridge is located in the urban area of Neuhaus am Rennweg in the Sonneberg district.
