The Apelsberg is 785.3 m above sea level. NHN high mountain of the Thuringian Slate Mountains in the district of Sonneberg , Thuringia ( Germany ).
It is located southwest of the Neuhausen district of Lichte in the Thuringian Forest Nature Park and forms the watershed in the source area of the Lichte between the Ascherbach and the Kleine Licht . Neighboring mountains are the Rückersbiel ( 755.6 m ) in the west, the Hahnberg ( 686 m ) and the Mutzenberg ( 769.6 m ) in the north and the Rauhhügel ( 802 m ) and the Mittelberg ( 803.5 m ) in the east.
The Apelsberg is the northeasternmost branch of the Eisenberg massif . The Rennsteig runs on the south side of the mountain . The ridge is located in the urban area of Neuhaus am Rennweg in the Sonneberg district.
