The administrative community was renamed on December 30, 2004, which gave the administrative community its final name, which was derived from the close proximity to the Rennsteig and the valley of the light .
Before that, the four municipalities were independent, each with its own municipal administration, its own municipal administrative seat (community hall) and mayor . The mayors worked on a voluntary basis with allowance for expenses .
As part of the Thuringia regional reform in 2018 and 2019 , the administrative community was dissolved on January 1, 2019. Lichte and Piesau were incorporated into Neuhaus am Rennweg and thus moved to the Sonneberg district . Reichmannsdorf and Schmiedefeld have been incorporated into the city of Saalfeld / Saale .
