resonant cavity light emitting diode

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The resonant-cavity light emitting diode ( RCLED or RC-LED , English , »light emitting diode with optical resonator«) is a form of light emitting diodes .

functionality

The operating principle is similar to a surface emitter (VCSEL from English vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser ), only that here there is no stimulated emission , but only the spontaneous emission perpendicular to the surface is amplified. This increases the efficiency of coupling the light into fiber optic cables compared to conventional LEDs.

The main application is in on-board data communication for automobiles and in avionics . RCLEDs made of InGaP with an emission wavelength of 650 nm are used, an absorption minimum of PMMA plastic fibers. The main advantages over conventional copper cables are weight reduction and insensitivity to interference signals at comparable data rates.
