Unterwirbach is a district of the city of Saalfeld / Saale in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia .

geography

The state road 2383 from Saalfeld to Bad Blankenburg crosses the village. Unterwirbach is located on the northeastern roof of the foothills of the Thuringian Slate Mountains near Saalfeld. Unterwirbach is excellent in terms of transport to the cities, but further away from the centers of the municipality of Saalfelder Höhe. The place is between 242 and 632 meters above sea level.

history

Unterwirbach was first mentioned in a document on February 17, 1286. In addition to iron ore mining and the trading activities of the inhabitants in the city markets, there were hardly any other sources of income. Brooms were tied in winter . Tourism and agriculture also played a role.

Unterwirbach was divided until the state of Thuringia was established in 1920. The Schwarzburg part belonged to the sovereignty of the Principality or Free State of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt (from 1850 to the District Office of Rudolstadt ). The Saxon-Ernestine part belonged to the Duchy of Saxony-Saalfeld from 1680 to 1735 , then to the Duchy of Saxony-Coburg-Saalfeld until 1826 and then to the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen , which became the Free State of Saxony-Meiningen in 1918 . The Saxon part of Unterwirbach belonged to the office of Saalfeld and was in turn subdivided into a monastery part and a knighthood part. From 1868 both Saxon shares belonged to the district of Saalfeld .

From the end of 1994 to 1996 Unterwirbach belonged to the administrative association Saalfelder Höhe . With the conversion of this into the unified municipality of Saalfelder Höhe on January 1, 1997, the place became a district of this. This was incorporated into Saalfeld / Saale on July 6, 2018.
