The Kurfürst-Salentin-Gymnasium (also known as "KSG" for short) is a high school located in the school center of Andernach in Rhineland-Palatinate with an ancient language branch and a natural science focus in the sponsorship of the Mayen-Koblenz district .
The grammar school is one of the oldest schools in Germany ; the first Latin school has been in Andernach since 1285.
Birgit Vogel has been the head of the school since the 2013/14 school year.
history
It is not known exactly where the first Latin school was housed, probably in Kirchstrasse near the parish church Maria Himmelfahrt, as a semicircular tower of the city wall near the church is called Schulturm . The old Latin school probably went down in the turmoil of the Reformation and the beginning of the Counter Reformation.
The founding of today's school was made possible by Salentin von Isenburg (1532–1610), the then Elector and Archbishop of Cologne and later Count of Isenburg-Grenzau . He assigns the city of Andernach twice the amount of 1000 gold guilders, an annual pension of 60 gold guilders, and by means of a document dated April 15, 1573, all goods and inclines of the nunnery at Namedy, which had been closed a year earlier, to "obtain the schools and maintenance of the schoolmasters" . This enabled the school he founded (with interruptions in the turmoil of war and changes in Andernach's French era) to remain as the “Stiftsgymnasium der Stadt Andernach” into the 20th century, financed by this foundation and others by the citizens.
From 1659 the school was housed above the ossuary of Maria Himmelfahrt, then above the Judenbad in the rear building of the historical town hall until 1793, briefly in the building of the former provost Malmedy (later home of the Weissheimer malting family).
In 1804, by Napoléon's decree of August 4th (16th Thermidor year XII), the Latin school (École secondaire) was housed in the former Annunziatenkloster in the east of the city on the site of today's monastery hospital. In 1815 the École Secondaire was converted into a Prussian Progymnasium with four classes. Jakob Richter was the director from 1805 to 1838.
In 1842 the collegiate high school moved to the new school building, which had been built in 1836, on the site of the demolished old hospital building (along with the St. Nicholas Chapel) near the former Minorite monastery, which later became the town hall. Today the Stadthausgalerie and the town hall are located there.
In 1904 the first Abitur examination took place in the Stiftsgymnasium after the school had received approval from its director at the time, Johann Josef Höveler, to expand it as a full high school three years earlier.
In 1931 a new school building (today's "old building", Salentinstraße 3) was moved into on the site of the former St. Thomas convent , which was rebuilt in 1957 after being destroyed in the Second World War .
In 1952 the school was converted into a state grammar school and named after its founder "Kurfürst-Salentin grammar school".
In 1970 the previously purely humanistic grammar school was expanded to include a new language branch.
As part of the plans to merge the secondary schools located in the Andernach school center into a joint comprehensive school, the new central building between the old building and the buildings of the Bertha von Suttner grammar school and the “dual secondary school St. Thomas” was inaugurated in 1979 . After these plans were abandoned, the school continued to grow, so that in 1992 it became necessary, as part of the renovation of the old building, to expand its attic and equip it with classrooms for the upper school.
In 1998 and 2000, two computer rooms with 15 seats each were set up. The computers were networked and connected to the Internet.
The school has also broken new ground in terms of energy and ecology, for example, a photovoltaic system was installed on the roof and the woodchip heating system in the basement of the Kurfürst-Salentin-Gymnasium is used to heat all four schools in the Andernach school center.
Special features of the school
Language offer
From the 2008/09 school year, the KSG participated in the “Latin PLUS” program. Latin continued to be the main subject, and English, which was continued from elementary school, is taught as the "language of encounter".
language | Latin | English | Greek | French |
---|---|---|---|---|
Ancient speakers | Class 5 | Class 5 | class 8 | Grade 8 (or 11) * |
Newspeaker | Grade 6 or 9 | Class 5 | - | Grade 6, 9 (or 11) * |
* De facto not offered for years |
At the beginning of the 2018/2019 school year, the old language train will be formally abolished, which means that the compulsory use of the third foreign language in grade 8 is no longer required. The following language sequences are now possible in the 5th and 6th grade:
- Latin - English
- English - Latin
- English France
In grade 9, all students can now optionally take Greek as a third foreign language.
Student exchange
Exchange programs exist with the following schools:
Lycée Ernest Couteaux, Saint-Amand-les-Eaux , France | |
various schools in Dimona , Israel | |
Individual exchanges with British Columbia , Canada |
Former exchange programs:

Scientific focus
A scientific focus was set up for the 2005/6 school year. This is intended to improve the students' mathematical and scientific skills. For this purpose, additional lessons for mathematics and the three natural sciences biology, chemistry and physics are integrated into the timetable in the grades of lower secondary - both in the old and modern language branches.
Working groups
The Kurfürst-Salentin-Gymnasium has a large number of voluntary working groups:
- the school newspaper "Sphinx",
- the writing workshop,
- the theater group "Kunst-Stück",
- the prefects for the orientation level,
- the mediators,
- the media scouts ,
- the MINT-AG (in cooperation with the Ada Lovelace project at the University of Koblenz ).
There is also a 70-member school choir, a 20-member lower school choir and a school band, which often give concerts throughout the year and are also successful outside of school.
As early as 1998, the KSG was included in the network of ecologically distinguished schools. The pupils collect old printer cartridges and mobile phones with "Meike - Dem Sammeldrachen" and are involved in various working groups, e.g. B.
- KSG for future
- Schulgarten AG
- Fairtrade AG.
School without racism - school with courage
