description
The Bertha von Suttner high school is located in the school center of the city of Andernach and is one of the two high schools in Andernach and one of the seven high schools in the Mayen-Koblenz district. The main catchment area is shared by the Bertha-von-Suttner-Gymnasium with the Kurfürst-Salentin-Gymnasium and extends to the entire district of Mayen-Koblenz.
The grammar school has a modern language focus with a focus on French teaching and is therefore one of the few schools in Germany where you can acquire the German-French double degree Abitur-Baccalauréat.
Namesake
The school is named after the Austrian pacifist , peace researcher , writer and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Bertha von Suttner . Since Bertha von Suttner campaigned for peace in Europe, decisions in the school are also made with such a direction. With this background actions take place between the school and the local refugees as well as projects for peace.
Special features of the school
Language offer
The Bertha-von-Suttner-Gymnasium is oriented towards modern languages and offers the languages English, French and Latin.
What is special about this is the nature of the French lessons, as you can start with French as your first foreign language in the fifth grade and English is then only taught as a minor subject for these students in the fifth grade. In the orientation level, these students also have two additional hours of French lessons per week, which are intended to provide them with a knowledge of French culture that goes beyond the usual. In the seventh grade, these pupils can start bilingual lessons on the recommendation of the teacher. In this class you will learn geography and history for one hour a week in German and two hours a week in French (Géo and Histoire). They also have a French textbook. The students of the bilingual branch can decide in the tenth grade whether they want to continue these lessons in the upper level and thus take their Abitur exams in German and also their Baccalauréat exam in front of a French examiner. This enables the students to acquire the German-French double degree AbiBac.
The options for the subjects are as follows:
language | English | French | Bilingual branch | Latin | Computer science |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
English speakers | Class 5 | Grade 6, 9 or 11 | - | Grade 6 or 9 | class 9 |
French first speaker | Grade 5 (minor, from 6th major) | Class 5 | Grade 7 (according to teacher decision) | class 9 | Grade 9 or 11 |
