The Neuwied – Koblenz railway line is a double-track , electrified main railway line in Rhineland-Palatinate . It connects the Neuwied station on the right-hand Rhine route with the Koblenz Hauptbahnhof railway junction and with the left-hand Rhine route and the Moselle route .

history

The railway line and the Kronprinz-Wilhelm-Brücke were built by the Prussian State Railways during the First World War for strategic military reasons and opened on August 15, 1918. At the same time, the Ludendorff Bridge between Remagen and Erpel was built together with the tour to the Ahr Valley Railway and the Hindenburg Bridge near Rüdesheim in connection with the connection to the Nahe Valley Railway .

The Urmitz Rheinbrücke stop was opened on September 15, 1935 . After the demolition by German pioneers on March 9, 1945, the line was out of service until it was rebuilt in 1954. Only two years later the bridge burned down and the repair lasted until May 1957.

From September 22, 1962, the bridge was fully functional again, the line was expanded to double-track throughout and electrified with overhead lines. To better connect the Westerwald via the Brexbachtalbahn , a single-track connecting curve was built on the right bank of the Rhine in a southerly direction to Engers train station , but it was never put into operation.

In 1987 the Urmitz Rheinbrücke stop was closed. After the bridge was renovated in 2005, the breakpoint was put back into operation on May 28, 2006.

At Neuwied station, the line branches out on two tracks and at no level with an overpass structure for the track to the north from the right-hand Rhine route . Today's Neuwied Rheinbrücke transfer point was at times a branch point for the connection to the Engers train station and the Brexbachtalbahn .

The Urmitz Rheinbrücke stop is located directly at the western bridgehead of the Urmitz railway bridge . The route then crosses the Neuwied basin in an elevated position and crosses the federal motorway 48 .

At the Kesselheim junction , a single-track line branches off to the eastern side of the route of the left-hand Rhine line , which it meets at the level of the Koblenz Nord industrial park in Koblenz-Bubenheim . There, in the Koblenz-Lützel Nord section of the Koblenz-Lützel station, there is a connection to the port railway of the Rhine port of Koblenz .

The line itself first crosses the left Rhine line and runs from the Koblenz-Lützel Nord railway station to the west, parallel to it, through the Koblenz-Lützel railway station and over the Moselle railway bridge, which was expanded to four tracks in 1927 .

At the level of the former Rhenish train station , the line branches out, two tracks lead in a wide curve to the right to the former freight station Koblenz Mosel , one track continues parallel to the left Rhine line via the Koblenz Stadtmitte stop to Koblenz main station .

In the local rail passenger traffic , the route is served by the lines RE 8 “Rhein-Erft-Express” , operated by DB Regio NRW , and RB 10 “RheingauLinie” , operated by VIAS GmbH . The first line mentioned runs every hour between Mönchengladbach Hbf and Koblenz Hbf , on weekends only from Rommerskirchen station , and leaves the right Rhine route at Neuwied station . The latter line runs from Frankfurt (Main) Hbf via Wiesbaden Hbf , Rüdesheim (Rhein) station and Koblenz Hbf to Neuwied station.

The first stop on the route is the Urmitz Rheinbrücke stop , which is located on the left bank of the Rhine. In Koblenz-Lützel train station and at the Koblenz Stadtmitte stop , the RE 8 line stops on the western platform. The RB 10, on the other hand, only stops at the Koblenz Stadtmitte stop and not at the other intermediate stops on the Neuwied – Koblenz railway line.
