With around 170 inhabitants, Nitztal is the smallest district or local district of Mayen in northern Rhineland-Palatinate and was an independent municipality until 1970.

location

Nitztal lies northwest in the valley of the Nitz . The Nitz is a tributary of the Nette . In the immediate vicinity of the village are the Denskopf ( 573  m above sea  level ), the Remmkipp ( 521  m above sea level ) and the Schälkopf ( 472  m above sea level ).

history

The place Nitztal is mentioned for the first time in 1110. Ore deposits in the Nitz area were already known to the Celts and were used by them. On January 1, 1967, the community was newly formed from the districts of Sankt Johann-Nitz of the community of Sankt Johann and Kürrenberg-Nitz of the former community of Kürrenberg . It existed for just under four years and was incorporated into Mayen on November 7, 1970.

There is an old mill at the entrance to the village, reminiscent of times gone by when countless mills were in operation at Elz , Nette and Nitz.

politics

The local district of Nitztal is represented by a local mayor and a local advisory board , which comprises seven members. Mayor is Stefan Wagner ( SPD ). In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was confirmed in his office for another five years with a share of 92.08% of the votes.

Sights and events

  • Only three kilometers down the Nitz at the confluence of the Nitz and the Nette is Bürresheim Castle .
  • A small church in the center of the village is an attraction on Sundays.
  • The Saffig tent camp takes place there every summer .
