The Rheindorfer castle is a dismantled castle in the Rhineland foothills . It is located on the northern edge of the Bornheim district of Walberberg in the far west of the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The castle was first mentioned in 1140 as the seat of the knight Christian von Rinchedorp, a servant of the count and later canon Adolf von Saffenberg . The oldest surviving part of the castle complex is the tower from the 11th to 12th centuries, which bears a striking resemblance to the Hexenturm in the Walberberg town center . The castle changed hands frequently until 1683, after having been in the possession of the Lords of Quad for 250 years, who bought the free aristocratic knight's seat for the Jesuit order .

In 1924 the Dominican Order acquired the castle complex and in 1926 founded the Dominican Monastery of St. Albert there , which was the seat of the Philosophical-Theological University of the Dominicans in Germany until 1975 . After the arrival of the Dominican Order, the castle was completely gutted and adapted to the new requirements within the preserved outer walls, especially for the important library with 156,000 books.

In 2007 the monastery was given up. Subsequently, the Förderkreis Historisches Walberberg e. V. in the castle the museum room Rheindorfer Burg . Since then, the Walberberg local history museum has been housed in the Walberberg parish house in the garden . In 2008, a private company based in Cologne acquired the listed building and founded the Walberberg domain , which houses a hotel, a restaurant, conference rooms and assisted living. The castle chapel, which has now been profaned , is used as an official wedding venue for civil marriages.
