Morenhoven Castle

Morenhoven Castle is a moated castle on the southern edge of Morenhoven , a district of Swisttal in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia . It embodies the type of the two-part castle complex . Consisting of an outer bailey and the main castle , it is surrounded by wide ponds that are fed by the Mühlenbach, a tributary of the Swist . While the manor house still stands on an island, parts of the moat system in the area of the formerly agricultural outer bailey have been filled in.

history

The building history of the castle has not yet been fully researched. Some sources speak of a "fortified courtyard" from the 9th century, from which the castle is said to have emerged, others date its origin to the 12th century. The gate tower was built in the late 15th century . During the Thirty Years' War the castle was destroyed by Hessian soldiers, from 1682 the new building, which is still preserved today, was built on the same site. This originally three-wing main castle was expanded into a four-wing complex in 1827 with a single-storey gallery wing. The gate tower was rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century. The mansion, made of plastered bricks , is kept in the listedMaria Theresa Yellow ”, the 19th century farm buildings are unplastered. The baroque gardens were laid out in the 18th century.

The castle was the ancestral seat of the Lords of Morenhoven first mentioned in a document in 1229 with Wilhelm ( Wilhelm de Morinhovin ). In 1299 the castle was donated to the Archbishops of Cologne . In 1345 , the Archbishop of Cologne, Walram von Jülich, enfeoffed the knight Heinrich von Itter with the castle. Scherffgin (Cologne city nobility ) and Beissel von Gymnich are named as other feudal lords . In 1503 Wilhelm Beissel von Gymnich sold the knight's seat to Johann Schall von Bell . The Schall von Bell family owned the water castle until 1806. That year Joseph Jordans from Neuss bought Morenhoven. The current owner of the castle is Leo von Jordans.
