Heimerzheim Castle is a moated castle on the southern edge of Heimerzheim in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia . It embodies the type of the two-part castle complex and is one of the best preserved in the Swist Valley . Consisting of an outer bailey and the main house , it is surrounded by wide ponds.

history

The castle was founded by the Lords of Heimerzheim in the middle of the 13th century at the latest . The knightly family owned it until 1324, when the castle became the seat of a commander through the sale of the knight Wennemar von Heimerzheim to the Teutonic Knights Order .

In the following centuries it changed hands several times until it finally came into the possession of the family of the Electoral Cologne minister, Count Caspar Anton von Belderbusch , in the 18th century . Through the marriage of Josephine von Belderbusch with her cousin Freiherr Karl von Boeselager, Heimerzheim and the neighboring Schillingscapellen monastery came into the possession of the Boeselager family , originally from the Magdeburger Börde.

The resistance fighters Georg and Philipp Freiherr von Boeselager , who were involved in the attack on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944 , come from Heimerzheim Castle.
