family

Adolf von Saffenberg was the son of Adalbert von Saffenberg (* before 1074; † around 1110 buried in Klosterrath ) and his wife Mathilde, as well as the grandson of Hermann IV von Saffenberg .

In 1122 Adolf married Margarete von Rötz , daughter of the Luitpoldinger Count Engelbert von Rötz and Schwarzenburg , a son of Berthold I of Schwarzenburg . Margarethe lived at Schwarzenburg Castle in Bavaria, near the Bohemian border, until she married. Margarete's uncle was Count Friedrich I. von Schwarzenburg , who was Archbishop of Cologne between 1100 and 1131 . It was precisely this archbishop who gave Adolf von Saffenberg the title of count after he married his niece.

children

At least three sons emerged from Adolf's marriage with Margarete:

  • Hermann V. von Saffenberg († 1172)
  • Adalbert II of Saffenberg († around 1152)
  • Adolf II of Saffenberg († after 1166)

title

Adolf I was Count of Saffenburg and Nörvenich , Count in the Cologne and Ruhrgau, Vogt of Kloster Marienthal, the Abbey of Klosterrath and St. Cassius in Bonn, and Domvogt of Cologne .

Marienthal Monastery

Like his father, Adolf von Saffenberg was Vogt of the Klosterrath Abbey. In 1136 he authorized the Augustinian monks there to build a monastery in the Hubachtal. The Hubach formed the eastern border between Saffenburg and Ahrweiler . At that time the valley was still wooded and uninhabited. After lengthy clearing work, the foundation stone for the new monastery was laid there. The first mass was celebrated in Marienthal Abbey as early as 1138 . The Archbishop of Cologne inaugurated the completed monastery church in 1141. The monastery was occupied by the Augustinian nuns who were subordinate to the abbot von Klosterrath.
