history

First mention

In 1316 the place Berinbech was first mentioned in the "Division of the People of Nümbrecht". The present town Bierenbachtal is the passage of time from the formerly separate villages Bonekamp , Driesch , Grumeth , lime kiln and low Bierbach grown together.

Mining

Until the beginning of the 20th century, limestones were extracted in the area of today's Bierenbachtal , which were then burned for building purposes (see the Kalkofen district and the Kalksteinstrasse). These limestones are also known as boundary limestone (they form the boundary between the central Devonian Mühlenberg and Hobräcker layers); they are mostly lens-shaped and represent former stromatopores - reefs .

However, since the deposits were relatively small and the lime was often contaminated by clay admixtures and the purer mass lime from Attendorn was easy to transport thanks to the better traffic routes, mining came to a standstill. The "Statistical News from the district of Gummersbach" reported in 1863 on the mining of iron ores in Bierenbach, which are closely tied to the limestone deposits. The shallow depth and extent of these iron ores lead to the assumption that they are tertiary weathering residues that often form pockets in the lime. However, the iron content was apparently not very high (Kaiser 1863), so that the "iron-lime lime" in the huts was only used as a smelting aggregate .

Karl Heckmann (1939) writes: "Mining decreased (after the Thirty Years' War ) because the iron stone pits, mostly open-cast mines, had soon dismantled numerous but not very extensive ore nests. After all, it was pretty much up to the end of the 18th century lively and productive .... In terms of commercial goods, the Homburg rule had little to offer abroad except iron and limestone. "

particularities

A family of butchers in Bierenbachtal has grown runner beans of the slaughter sword variety for generations and passed them on in the village. In this way, the vegetable has developed its own genome with special properties that are ideal for the Bergisch climate and the Bergisch soil. These beans do better than non-native runner beans, are less susceptible to pests and diseases, and are also very tasty.
