Berkenroth (dialect Bä'erkero'eth ) is a district of Nümbrecht in the Oberbergischer Kreis in southern North Rhine-Westphalia within the administrative district of Cologne .

Location and description

The place is about four kilometers south of the center of the municipality Nümbrecht as the crow flies. Berkenroth is located on a southern slope to the Waldbrölbach , on the federal road 478 .

  • Berkenroth had a train station on the Bröltalbahn . This narrow-gauge railway operated between Hennef and Waldbröl until the 1950s and was then replaced by a bus service from February 1, 1953.
  • The Protestant church, the community elementary school and the village community center are located in today's center.
  • After the Second World War, the cemetery association became an initiative to

Construction of a church, which was consecrated in 1958.

  • There is also a pottery in the village - in the old village school - and some small businesses on site.

history

The town was founded between 900 and 1200.

First mention

The place was mentioned for the first time in 1316 , namely "parts of the people of Nümbrecht". The spelling of the first mention was Berrekerode , this means clearing a Berico.

Homburg country

Berkenroth later belonged to the imperial rule of Homburg .

  • In 1579 there were 22 families resident, according to the "Fuder-Haber-Zettel" (feed oat list) Kapellgebiet Marienberghausen. The population density at that time corresponded to that of Nümbrecht, probably because of the ore mine and the smelter nearby.
  • Up until the Siegburg settlement in 1604 - especially in the 15th and 16th centuries - there were disputes between the dukes of Berg and the counts of Sayn - the lords of Homburg, because the Homburg area separated the Bergische holdings of the Windeck office from the rest of the land of the Dukes of Berg.

Modern times

After the annexation of French troops under Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806, the Homburg region was integrated administratively into the Duchy of Berg and, from 1815, Prussian territory into the province of Jülich-Kleve-Berg . Berkenrodt , (then spelling) had 183 inhabitants at this time (1817).

  • In 1863 the Brölchaussee , today the B 478 to Waldbröl, was completed.
  • From September 6, 1870, the narrow-gauge railway called the Bröltalbahn, called the "Brölbähnchen", ran from Hennef to Waldbröl, with a stop in Berkenroth.
  • In 1969 the communities of Marienberghausen and Nümbrecht were merged as part of the NRW community reform.
