history

First mention

The place was mentioned for the first time in 1316, namely "Division of the people of Nümbrecht. The spelling of the first mention was Staffilbech . This applies to Ober- and Niederstaffelbach.

The place got its name from the source of the Staffelbach, which rises in the middle of the old town center. The Staffelbach flowed through the extinguishing water pond of Oberstaffelbach, which was called the "cat pool" because small cats are said to have been drowned here in the past. After the connection to a powerful water supply, the pond was filled in. The Staffelbach now flows past Mühlenthal and through the Märchental, in which Engelbert Humperdinck is said to have had the idea for his opera " Hansel and Gretel ", after which it flows into the Homburg Bröl near Herfterath. At the end of the Second World War Oberstaffelbach was bombed with high explosive and incendiary bombs, where several houses were hit and their residents were left homeless. Fortunately, no human life was to be mourned from the bombardment. After the war, the place expanded in an easterly direction to the edge of Überdorf and is separated from this place by the course of the Diepersbach. Oberstaffelbach has no economic significance as no companies are based here.
