Fernando de Carvalho Ruas

Fernando de Carvalho Ruas (born January 15, 1949 in Farminhão , Viseu ) is a Portuguese politician ( PSD ). He was the mayor of the city of Viseu for many years and has been a MEP since 2014.

Life

Fernando Ruas was born in the municipality of Farminhão not far from the northern Portuguese city of Viseu. He studied economics at the University of Coimbra . He has been a member of the Portuguese Social Democrats (PSD) since his youth .

In 1989 he won the mayor's office of the city of Viseu in the local elections, which he defended in all subsequent local elections (1993, 1997, 2001, 2005, 2009) until 2013. In addition to this task he took on numerous other political offices, among other things, he was chairman of the district assembly of Viseu since 1990 and Chairman of the Portuguese Association of Cities ( Associação Nacional de Municipios ) since 2002. On the part of the Assembly of the Republic , he was for the European Committee of the Regions been nominated .

After he was no longer allowed to run in the local elections in 2013, his party nominated him for second place on the Aliança Portugal list for the 2014 European elections . The list connection achieved seven places, so that Ruas has been a MEP for Portugal since May 2014. Almeida Henriques (PSD) succeeded him in his office as mayor of Viseu.

Fernando Ruas is married.
