Joanna Catherine Cherry QC (born March 18, 1966 ) is a British politician with the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Cherry attended St Margaret's Convent School in Edinburgh . She studied law and worked as a lawyer for over 20 years. In 2009 she was promoted to crown attorney . Cherry specializes in sexual offenses and is widely recognized as one of the most influential UK Crown Attorneys . She appeared on several occasions at the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom . In the run-up to the Scottish independence referendum in 2014 , she was co-founder of the Lawyers for Yes interest group , in which around 200 well-known lawyers spoke out in favor of accepting the referendum.

Political career

After the Labor politician Alistair Darling did not run for the British general election in 2015 , the party decided to position Ricky Henderson as his successor in his constituency of Edinburgh South West . Cherry ran for the SNP in the same constituency. After the SNP gained massive votes in these elections, Cherry achieved the highest share of votes with 43% and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . Despite losing votes, Cherry narrowly maintained her mandate in the early general election in 2017 .
