Charles Clarke (politician)
Charles Rodway Clarke (born September 21, 1950 in London ) is a British Labor Party politician and Minister of the Interior in the Blair government from December 2004 to May 2006 .
Clarke was a member of the House of Commons from 1997 to 2010 and became Minister without Portfolio in 2001 . In 2002 he became Minister of Education before being appointed Minister of the Interior on December 15, 2004, following the resignation of David Blunkett .
After a severe defeat in the British local elections on April 25, 2006 for the Labor Party, Prime Minister Tony Blair reacted with a cabinet reshuffle, including dismissing Charles Clarke as Home Secretary. Until then, Clarke was considered one of the strongest ministers in the cabinet at the time. Most recently, however, he came under fire because he was held responsible for not having deported 1000 foreign offenders after their imprisonment, so that some of them were reoffended in Great Britain. He was also largely responsible for persuading the European Parliament to adopt a directive on data retention of communication data .
