history

The name was established around the middle of the 19th century , but the function is older. Until the Second World War, the Prime Minister, if he was a member of the House of Commons, assumed the function himself, supported from 1922 by a deputy who took care of day-to-day business. Since then there has been an independent leader who was also assigned a deputy at times . Since the position is not anchored in law and the incumbent is not officially appointed by the crown, it is linked to another. More recently it was that of the Lord President of the Council .
