Hammersmith is the name of two neighboring overground stations of the London Underground in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham . They are in tariff zone 2 at the intersection of six main streets in the Hammersmith district . Trains run here on the Circle Line , District Line , Hammersmith & City Line and Piccadilly Line . A nearby attraction is the Hammersmith Apollo Concert Hall .

The District Line and Piccadilly Line station is located in the cut in the middle of a busy roundabout with a diameter of almost 200 meters. The tracks of the Piccadilly Line lie between those of the District Line. Two central platforms make it easier to change trains between the two lines that are traveling in the same direction. Immediately to the west of the station there is an approximately 200 meter long tunnel under Beadon Road. The Hammersmith & City Line and Circle Line stations are on Beadon Road, on the north side of the roundabout. It has the shape of a terminus . Both stations are connected by a pedestrian underpass.

In 2014, 29.26 million passengers used the District Line and Piccadilly Line stations, 9.72 million those of the Hammersmith & City Line and the Circle Line.

history

Station of the Hammersmith & City Line and the Circle Line

On June 13, 1864, the Metropolitan Railway (predecessor of the Metropolitan Line ) extended the world's first underground line from Paddington further south-west to Hammersmith. The first provisional terminus station was a little further north and was replaced on December 1, 1868 by the building that still exists today.

The Metropolitan District Railway (now District Line) also strove to expand its route network into the rapidly growing western suburbs. On September 9, 1874, she reached Earl's Court , Hammersmith. From June 1, 1877, the District trains continued to run on the London and South Western Railway (L & SWR) to Richmond .

The Metropolitan Railway had also signed a cooperation agreement with L & SWR and built a connecting track to the tracks in the direction of Richmond. This connection, opened on October 1, 1877, branched off just before the terminus and led through the newly built Hammersmith station (Grove Road) and over a short viaduct to Ravenscourt Park station . On December 31, 1906, train journeys over the connecting line were stopped. Parts of the viaduct have been preserved to this day.

On December 15, 1906, the Piccadilly Line opened . The first section led from Hammersmith through the city center to Finsbury Park . The western extension of the line followed on July 4, 1932. To make room for this extension, the station had to be rebuilt; for example, a second central platform was added.

The District Line and Piccadilly Line station was rebuilt in the 1990s. The building complex has since also included a shopping center and a bus station . During the renovation, parts of the original ticket hall came to light. The decorative tiles , on which the Hammersmith Bridge is depicted, have been preserved and can be seen today in the north counter hall. Since December 13, 2009, Hammersmith has also been the terminus for trains on the Circle Line.
