The station in tariff zone 4 was used by 7.95 million underground passengers in 2013, plus 9.093 million rail passengers. It has four tracks with head platforms for the lines ending here and two continuous tracks for the trains of South West Trains. Between the two parts of the station there is still a head track, which is part of the southern part of the South West Trains. Although the North London Line and the District Line to Gunnersbury share the tracks, both lines use different terminus platforms.

history

The station was opened on July 27, 1846 by the Richmond and West End Railway (R & WER), as the terminus of the line from Clapham Junction . The Windsor, Staines and South Western Railway (WS & SWR) extended the route to the west. Both companies merged to form the London and South Western Railway (L & SWR).

The L & SWR opened a branch line on January 1, 1869, which began at Addison Road (now Kensington Olympia ). The route continued through Shepherd's Bush and Hammersmith via a connecting curve that has now been closed. There was also a short link to Brentford on the North London Railway (NLR). From June 1, 1870 to October 31, 1870 trains of the Great Western Railway (GWR) also ran here from Paddington on the tracks of the Hammersmith & City Railway and Hammersmith to Richmond.

On June 1, 1877, the Metropolitan District Railway (MDR; predecessor of today's District Line ) began operating a short stretch between its then terminus Hammersmith and the L & SWR tracks east of Ravenscourt Park . This allowed the company to run trains over the L & SWR route to Richmond. The electrification of the Gunnersbury - Richmond line took place on August 1, 1905. From June 3, 1916, only MDR trains ran on the line after the NLR, GWR, Metropolitan Railway and, most recently, the L & SWR had withdrawn.
