Aranea Peel with Grausame Töchter at the 25th Wave-Gotik-Treffen 2016.

Grausame Töchter is a German band that uses elements from the fields of EBM , industrial , punk , film music and techno in their music . The German-language lyrics of the singer Aranea Peel often revolve around topics such as sadomasochism and relationship conflicts.

history

The band was founded in Hamburg in 2009 . Founding members include Aranea Peel (vocals) and Gregor Hennig (drums, studio mix). The band has also performed live since 2010. Due to the BDSM elements in the performance, there is usually an age restriction for the concerts , i.e. the concert-goers must be at least 18 years old. In addition to the regular cast, there are always different, usually female guests on stage, both as singers or musicians and in the field of performance art.

style

The musical style of Grausame Töchter is difficult to pin down as numerous elements have flowed into the music. These include techno, futurepop, EBM, industrial, punk, dark wave, trip-hop, but also chanson, tango, polka and waltz. The texts consist of spoken words, spoken chants and classical elements sung in soprano. In other pieces, the vocals are electronically distorted.

The number of instruments used is just as extensive. The band does not consist of a rigid line-up either live or in the studio. While the first album still mainly contained electronic elements, various guest musicians were already on stage at the first concerts. Sometimes only on individual tours or over several years with the cast. The instruments used on the stage or in the studio include synthesizers and the classic instruments of a rock band, i. H. Drums, bass and guitar, but also piano, cello, trumpet, accordion and the like. a.

In terms of text, the pieces deal with sado masochism, homosexuality, sociopaths, violent fantasies and social abysses. The band differs from projects in the dark wave scene, which at first glance appear to be similarly conceived, through a broader spectrum of expression, exaggeration and tongue-in-cheek theatricality. The band's fifth album (Engel im Rausch) also features cover versions of two Neue Deutsche Welle pieces for the first time: Goldener Reiter, originally by Joachim Witt and Rosemarie by Hubert Kah .

Side projects

In addition to her work with the Grausige Tämtern, Aranea Peel performed several times with orchestral musicians as part of a chanson project. The trumpeter Michael Gross from the Berliner Ensemble also performed at some of the Grausome Töchter concerts . As part of this project, u. a. Cover versions of pieces such as Die Seeräuber-Jenny ( Bertolt Brecht , Kurt Weill ) and I don't know who I belong to , a piece written by Friedrich Hollaender for Marlene Dietrich .
