Heldmaschine is a German music group from Koblenz founded in 2011 . Musically, the group belongs to the New German Hardship (NDH) genre.

history

Heldmaschine emerged in 2011 as a parallel project from the Rammstein tribute band Völkerball . On April 6, 2012, the band's first album, Weichen + Zunder, was released, and in the same month the music video for Radioaktiv . Their own music was initially sold under the band name Völkerball, but with the addition of Weichen + Zunder . Since the concert-goers were irritated, who only expected Rammstein covers at Völkerball, the decision was made in May 2013 to sell the Völkerball-atypical music under the name Heldmaschine . With the name change, the line-up of the band also changed: Marco Schulte (bass), brother of the singer René Anlauff, replaced Tilmann Carbow and Andreas Schanowski. The position of keyboardist has been deleted. After the band split, the album was re-released with a revised logo and band name. In May 2013 there were the first concerts as a hero machine. The music video for Doktor followed in autumn 2013 .

The CD Propaganda was released on March 28, 2014 . For the regional press, the band was considered the "greatest new discovery of the New German hardship scene". Heldmaschine played in 2014 at major music festivals such as the Dark Munich Festival in Munich and the Blackfield Festival in Gelsenkirchen, as well as at a number of their own concerts across Germany. They were part of the ice holy nights concert series in Switzerland, together with Subway to Sally , Unzucht and Saltatio Mortis .

On August 21, 2015, the studio album Lügen was released. The Lies Tour took place from October 30th to December 5th, 2015 and included a total of 21 performances. Heldmaschine played in 2016 at the Rockharz Open Air and took part in the M'era Luna Festival . In addition, the band accompanied Erdling and Megaherz on their ERDWÄRTS TOUR 2016 from September to mid-December 2016 . The album Himmelskörper was released on September 4th, 2016 . The band performed at the Wacken Open Air 2017. At the end of the year, the band gave 15 concerts on the 2017 Himmelskörper autumn tour . The band Maerzfeld appeared as the opening act at most of the concerts . At the end of the year, the band gave a concert in Oberhausen on December 29th under the motto Night of the Heroes .

In 2018, the band's first live album was released with Live und Laut. Marco Vetter accompanied the band on guitar up to and including February 2018 in place of Stankovic. In addition, the band appeared as the opening act for Hematoma . In March 2018, Heldmaschine appeared as the opening act for Maerzfeld. In September 2018 it was announced that Stankovic will leave the band in October. Eugen Leonhardt takes his place, who had previously represented Stankovic at several concerts.

At the end of 2019, the fifth studio album, Im Fadenkreuz, was released.

Band members

In 2008 René Anlauff (born May 23, 1972 in Iserlohn as Pierre-René Schulte), Tobias Kaiser (born June 24, 1979 ), Claus Huckriede (born January 3, 1975 in Mendig ), Dirk Oechsle, Marco Vetter and Tilmann Carbow (* March 4th ) founded the band Völkerball . After Huckriede left the band, Andreas Schanowski (born March 25, 1988 ) became the new keyboardist. Vetter was replaced in 2013 by Björn Müller (born September 2, 1976 in Bonn ). The attempt was made to master the two band projects, Völkerball and Heldmaschine , with the same members , but Tilmann Carbow and Björn Müller are only available for the tribute concerts ( Völkerball ). Only singer René Anlauff, guitarist Tobias Kaiser and drummer Dirk Oechsle are members of both projects. The position of keyboardist was canceled at Heldmaschine. Andreas Schanowski was only involved in two pieces ( Weiter ! , Kreuzzug ) on the Propaganda album .

René Anlauff runs a full-time recording studio. He is married to the German rock and pop singer Meike Anlauff , who occasionally provided vocal support for her husband's projects.

Marco Schulte is the brother of René Anlauff and was born on October 22, 1973 . He is a music teacher at the Modern Music School MMS GmbH in Koblenz.

Tobias Kaiser studied jazz and popular music at the state university for music and performing arts in Mannheim , with a focus on guitar music. He is also a music teacher at the Modern Music School and already had band experience.

Dirk Oechsle has been a drummer since childhood and received his diploma from the Modern Music School in 1997. Oechsle has been working as a lecturer at various locations of the music school since 1998, and has been the franchisee of this school concept and head of the Koblenz and Emmelshausen locations since 2008 . Oechsle was the drummer in the band Frameless .

Marco cousin

Marco Vetter was once a founding member of Völkerball and switched to the Heldmaschine band when it was founded . In 2014 he also left this project. Vetter always steps in as a substitute. Dejan Dean Stankovic (born March 13 ) took his place as guitarist . He teaches at a music school in Remagen . For the pop singer Roman Lob he wrote the song Day by Day on the album Changes . Lob and Stankovic played together at Rooftop Kingdom for years . Stankovic was the guitarist of the band Cocoon , which split up in 2013 and is today, alongside Heldmaschine, guitarist of the post-hardcore band Kaiju from Neuwied , which was founded in 2014 . In 2018, Stankovic left Heldmaschine . Eugen Leonhardt took his place on the guitar. He studied guitar at the Popakademie in Mannheim and graduated with a Master of Arts degree in 2014. Today he works as a composer and guitar teacher.

style

music

Due to their origin from Völkerball, Heldmaschine are musically very similar to their role model Rammstein. In a musical comparison with Rammstein, however, Heldmaschine attach more importance to electronic elements. Their own music combines elements from related styles such as hard rock and alternative metal , but also German rock . Techno-elements are also often used. The use of the keyboard is important, although the keyboarder is not officially a member of the band. In the studio, the keyboard parts were mainly recorded by Andreas Schanowski, at live concerts the keyboard chords come off the tape. With the release of the album Lügen , the band increasingly relied on electro elements.

Texts

The Rammstein influence can be seen in all forms in the lyrics of the albums. The texts are mostly ambiguous. There are songs that have the same name as the album or even the band itself. The songs deal with socially critical issues that other bands, especially Rammstein, have dealt with before. So it goes in ogre to cannibalism and necrophilia , but the ambiguity of the texts comes again to the fore, which is also an interpretation in the direction of identity theft permit. The ideas came from current events or other literary works. For example, Struwwelpeter (“ The story of the thumb sucker ”) was the model for the text of the song Du Darfst Das nicht . Some songs are strongly reminiscent of Rammstein songs such as Du Darfst Das nicht an Hilf mir from the album Rosenrot and Bückstabü from Liebe ist für alle .

Vocally, the songs are in the bass range. The rolling R is also dominant .

Stage show

All the sets were made by the band, mostly by Anlauff. In the beginning, all props were made of wood sprayed with paint. Since the band mostly performs in halls, Heldmaschine focuses on lighting effects and artificial fog and avoids pyrotechnics . For the song Radioaktiv , Anlauff beamed laser beams through the hall with a device on his shoulders. To the song doctor he wears a blood-smeared white surgical suit and an oversized syringe. For the song Maskenschlacht , all band members also wear white masks, while the stage is only illuminated with black light, as is the case for The Robots ; costumes with LED lighting are used here.
