Völkerball is a tribute band from Koblenz that was founded in 2008 . The singer and front man is René Anlauff. The band covers only songs by the Berlin NDH band Rammstein . The stage show, pyrotechnics , costumes and stage decorations are also similar to that of Rammstein.

history

Beginnings and own album

The name of Völkerball is always supplemented with the subtitle A Tribute to Rammstein . The band was founded in 2008 by René Anlauff (born May 23, 1972 in Iserlohn as Pierre-René Schulte), Tobias Kaiser (born June 24, 1979 ), Claus Huckriede (born January 3, 1975 in Mendig ), Dirk Oechsle, Marco Vetter and Tilmann Carbow (born March 4 ) founded. René Anlauff, Claus Huckriede and Tobias Kaiser played together with the cover band Vampire . The name Völkerball is derived from the Rammstein concert DVD Völkerball and the accompanying live album from 2006. The band performs mostly in Germany and sings songs from the Rammstein group and some songs from the Heldmaschine group . After Huckriede left the band in 2010, Andreas Schanowski (born March 25, 1988 ) became the new keyboardist.

In 2012, Weichen + Zunder released the band's first album. The album contains twelve tracks, eleven of which are original compositions. The last track was covered by Hans Albers' La Paloma . Musically and stylistically, the album is based on the Rammstein albums Herzeleid und Sehnsucht . With the staccato guitars, the electronic parts and the distinctive vocals of Anlauff, the band is very close to their role models.

Band split: birth of the hero machine

In 2013 the decision was made to sell all uncovered songs, as well as all songs from the album Weichen + Zunder , under the name Heldmaschine and to perform under this name at concerts. This way one could avoid the misunderstandings that had arisen before, as the audience expected that the Rammstein cover band Völkerball would only play Rammstein songs at concerts and not any deviating or own songs.

Since 2013

Marco Vetter left the band in 2013 and was only available as a guitarist for Heldmaschine. Björn Müller (born September 2, 1976 in Bonn ) replaced Vetter as guitarist.

In addition to their tour appearances, the band also appeared at festivals and other music events. For example, Völkerball was an important part of Rock in Bad Ems or the Rurseefest near Düren . The band is popular in Rhineland-Palatinate , North Rhine-Westphalia , Lower Saxony but also in the new federal states.

Band members

René Anlauff runs a full-time recording studio. He is married to the German rock and pop singer Meike Anlauff , who occasionally provided vocal support for her husband's projects.

Tobias Kaiser studied jazz and popular music at the state university for music and performing arts in Mannheim , with a focus on guitar music. He is also a music teacher at the Modern Music School and already had band experience.

Marco cousin

Marco Vetter was once a founding member of Völkerball and switched to the band Heldmaschine when it was founded (he also left this project in 2014). Björn Müller took his place as guitarist. Müller studied at the Modern Music Academy in Offenbach am Main . Beginning in 1999 he attended the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles . From 2004 until the dissolution in 2007 he was guitarist with Frameless . Then he founded the instrumental trio Spitzbart . Müller works as a music lecturer at the New Music Academy in Offenbach and publishes DVDs on improvisation concepts with guitars.

Dirk Oechsle has been a drummer since childhood and received his diploma from the Modern Music School in 1997 . Oechsle has been working as a lecturer at various locations of the music school since 1998, and has been the franchisee of this school concept and head of the Koblenz and Emmelshausen locations since 2008 . Oechsle was the drummer in the band Frameless .

Carbow gives bass lessons at the Klangstation music school in Remagen. Occasionally he accompanies singers in live performances, such as the singing duo Nica & Joe . He works as a supervisor in a primary school in Bonn, where he realizes projects in the fields of music, theater and sport. Schanowski is currently studying in Bonn.

style

Music and lyrics

As a tribute band, Völkerball plays songs by the band Rammstein. However, every now and then a few songs from the parallel project Heldmaschine are played at concerts.

Stage show

Andreas Schanowski in a rubber dinghy with a shark (2016)

Völkerball's stage show is based on that of Rammstein: A heart is symbolically lit for my heart burns . For the song Haifisch , a band member, mostly Andreas Schanowski, sits in a rubber dinghy and lets the audience transport him through the hall. At the stage show for Mein Teil , Anlauff can be seen as a butcher with a bloodied butcher's apron; the microphone has a long knife blade, as in Rammstein's show. With the same keyboardist Schanowski is chased across the stage by Anlauff until he sits down in an oversized kettle and - here, Rammstein is also quoted - is "cooked" with a flamethrower. Anlauff holds a small doll in his hand next to the music box , which he symbolically weighs or drops to match the text.
