Jesus on Extasy (JOE) was a band from Essen founded in 2005 by Dorian Deveraux and Chai Deveraux . The band's musical style can be described as a hybrid of rock and metal elements and electronic music . At the end of 2014, the band announced their breakup.

history

The first demo EP "Assasinate Us" in 2005 in Chai Deveraux own studio Sinustal in food production, where the band also worked in later years to the pre-production for their albums. The EP was described in the "Demozone" section of the music magazine Sonic Seducer in the review of the music journalist Francois Duchateau as a record "that not only promises, but keeps what the potential offers". Jesus on Extasy had their first appearance in July 2006 at the Bochum Total Festival, one of the largest music festivals in Europe. During this gig, the record company Drakkar Entertainment became aware of the band that was operating without a record deal at the time and signed the band a short time later.

The debut album "Holy Beauty" was released on March 30, 2007 and received mostly positive reviews. In addition to ten of their own songs, there was also a remix of the single "Assassinate Me" by the industrial metal pioneers KMFDM on the album.

As part of the album's release, the band went on a short tour in March with the violin rock band Last Instance , which was also under contract with Drakkar Entertainment . This was followed by an extensive tour of Germany in May with Dope Stars Inc. (Italy) and Entwine (Finland). In the summer of the same year, various festival appearances followed, including at Bochum Total , the Woodstage Festival (with Marilyn Manson and Type O Negative ) and the M'era Luna Festival , as well as a headlining Germany tour in autumn at the Jesus on Extasy were supported by the Hamburg Post Industrial Band Philiae as the opening act for some concerts . At the end of the year the band performed at the festival series "On A Dark Winter's Night" in Salzburg and Oberhausen together with bands like Nightwish and Dope Stars Inc.

BJ and Dorian

In May 2008 Jesus on Extasy released the second album "Beloved Enemy" on Drakkar Entertainment , which entered the German Alternative Charts (DAC) at number 1 and again received mostly positive criticism.

In order to promote the album, festival appearances followed, including at the Wave Gotik Treffen or the Summer Breeze Festival in Dinkelsbühl , as well as an autumn tour as support for the new German hard band Eisbrecher .

2009 marked the first year since the band was founded that Jesus on Extasy did not release an album. The band played selected festival gigs, including at the Amphi Festival in Cologne and the M'era Luna Festival in Hildesheim. The band said they wanted to concentrate on the production of the third album. In 2010, the band largely stopped their live activities and only played a few selected concerts, including in the Hamburg Prinzenbar, at the Blackfield Festival in Gelsenkirchen or in Donaueschingen . The third album "No Gods", which was produced entirely in-house, was released on August 27, 2010.

In January 2011 Jesus on Extasy announced the separation from singer Dorian Deveraux . Bassist BJ and keyboardist Ophelia Dax also left the band. After joining the Norwegian synth-rock band Apoptygma Berzerk, Dax was no longer able to be part of Jesus On Extasy. Chai Deveraux then founded his own label Farscape Records and found a new voice for Jesus On Extasy in singer Manja Kaletka. On October 7th, 2011 the last studio album "The Clock" was released. In the same year the band went on tour with the German Gothic Metal band Lord of the Lost .

In December 2014, the band announced their breakup.

style

The band combined influences from synth rock , alternative rock and glam rock . The strong contrast between the keyboard sounds and the hard guitar elements was characteristic. Electronic sounds were paired with rocking riffs, each with varying emphases. Provocation and harmony are reflected in the sound and complement the choice of topics in the texts.

Chai Deveraux also carried over this sound as a remixer in his interpretations of foreign songs. In his Sinustal recording studio in Essen, Chai has already produced remixes for bands such as ASP , Krieger , New Model Army , Dommin and Xandria .

occupation

Founded by Dorian and Chai Deveraux, the face of the band has changed several times over the years. At the first concerts, bassist Ivy supported the band on stage until she announced her departure at the end of 2006. In spring 2007, the musicians Leandra Ophelia Dax and Alicia Vayne (Andrea Odendahl, previously with PAIN ) joined the band on keyboards and second guitar. Live the four were supported on drums by BJ , who was an integral part of the band from summer 2007.

At the end of 2008 BJ was no longer able to support the band on drums due to a shoulder injury. The multi-instrumentalist switched to the bass, especially since that was the instrument that he said he mastered better anyway. The long-time rehearsal room neighbor Dino Steinherr became the new drummer .

In the spring, the line-up of the band changed almost completely: After Dorian Deveraux, Leandra Ophelia Dax and BJ split up, Manja Kaletka joined Jesus on Extasy as singer and Chris Kassad on bass.
