history

Recording from November 11th 2007, concert Berlin - Huxleys
Drummer Nobusama at Rockharz 2016
Appearance at the Feuertanz Festival 2013 in Wuppertal .

Coppelius first became famous on September 28, 2002 at the farewell concert of the band The Inchtabokatables , where she played as the opening act . The following year, Coppelius reached the Berlin final of the Emergenza competition. The band was the audience winner with 555 votes, but only achieved second place thanks to the jury's verdict.

In 2003 and 2004 she also appeared as the opening act for Mila Mar , Mutabor , Fiddler's Green , Nik Page , Tanzwut , Subway to Sally and Uriah Heep, among others . The demo EP To My Creator , which has been available since 2005, contains the band's first video for the song I Get Used To It as an additional multimedia track. The video was shot by Ina Göring, the violinist of the befriended Berlin band Volkstrott , and shows the musicians playing in the Komische Oper Berlin . In autumn 2005 she supported Subway to Sally across Germany, while concerts with the group last instance followed in February and March 2006 . In addition, Coppelius played over 40 concerts in 2006, many of them outside of Berlin, as the main band.

On April 14, 2007, Coppelius presented the video for the song Morgenstimmung in the machine house of the Kulturbrauerei in Berlin . As with the first video, Ina Göring directed . In the same year there was also an appearance at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen . In the summer of 2007 the band signed a contract with FAME Recordings , their debut album Time-Zeit was released on September 21 , and another tour took place as the opening act for Subway to Sally in autumn 2007.

In spring 2009 the second album, Tumult , was released, on which B. Deutung , Ms. Schmitt and Eric Fish from Subway to Sally can be heard as guest musicians. The third album Zinnober was released on October 29, 2010 . The fourth album, Extrablatt, followed on February 15, 2013 . The fifth album Hertzmaschine has been available since January 30, 2015 , with which the band confesses itself to steampunk for the first time . This was followed on November 14, 2015 by the world premiere of the so-called "world's first steampunk opera" Klein-Zaches called Zinnober based on the Hoffmann story of the same name in the Musiktheater im Revier in Gelsenkirchen.

On February 16, 2016, the band published the info on their Facebook page that they are taking a break after having treated themselves to a "stage abstinence concert tour". In an interview with Clockworker, the band confirmed that it was just a break.

On October 7, 2018, drummer Nobusama announced his resignation from the band. The successor, Mr. Linus, was introduced on April 20, 2019 on the band's Facebook page.

On May 9, 2019, another opera called Krabat was announced, the premiere of which was scheduled for exactly one year later, but had to be postponed until further notice due to the Corona crisis . On the occasion of this, the band also released a parody of their own title Locked Out from the album Extrablatt under the title Locked In at the end of April 2020 .

style

The music of Coppelius is influenced by Iron Maiden , among other things , whereby the specialty lies in the use of the instruments clarinet , cello and double bass instead of electric guitar and electric bass . Cello and bass are often heavily distorted , as is common with Apocalyptica . The clarinets are also changed in sound with various effects and often play solos . Coppelius cover many Iron Maiden songs. With 1916 they also covered a song by Motörhead on To My Creator , Rightful King on Tumult is a cover version of the song of the same name by Catriona and The Inchtabokatables . As with the Catriona version, Eric Fish takes over the vocals.

Coppelius tries to create a fictional identity according to which the band members come from the 19th century. This identity is maintained in interviews and on the website , which contains almost no real information about the band. For example, a "CONCERTOLOGY (1803-1954 in excerpts)" can be found on the band's homepage. Even when performing live, the band stays true to their style through their choice of clothing ( frock coat , patricide , tailcoat and top hat ) and their appearance with butlers and absinthe . The audience adapts by dressing similarly and the traditional “encore!” Shouts with a more stylish “ Da Capo! “Replaced. This dense atmosphere has meant that Coppelius is considered a particularly good live band. Coppelius is perceived as an essential German band in the steampunk scene and has many fans.

The lyrics by Coppelius, like the style, are strongly influenced by ETA Hoffmann and describe the experiences of the musicians (who traveled from the 19th century to the present) in the modern world, reflections on modern people, black-romantic horror stories and drug experiences . Another important aspect in many texts is time, sometimes from the perspective of a work of art that outlives its master ( To My Creator ), sometimes from the perspective of a person who has lost his partner ( Chilled With Fright ). Greed and envy are a common theme, especially in the pieces from the first two albums. The narration is often highly subjective and uncritical from the perspective of a protagonist. For example, in the play Zu dir, the narrator becomes a murderer, he justifies his actions in the refrain with the words "I just want to see you!" In Lilienthal , Otto Lilienthal is sabotaged by an envious person and dies in the crash.

The band name Coppelius is based on Hoffmann's character in a novel of the same name, in whom she appears in various novels and stories. For example in the well-known story The Sandman . References to Hoffmann works also appear in many pieces such as Olimpia , Schöne Augen or Coppelia , sometimes very subtle as in "Der Advokat".

Coppelius himself describe their music on flyers as the “chamber core from the 19th century” or - referring to “Heavy Metal” - as “Heavy Wood”.
