Marsheaux are a synth-pop duo from Thessaloniki , Greece , consisting of the musicians Marianthi Melitsi and Sophie Sarigiannidou. They both moved to Athens in 2000 and formed the group to advance their love of electronic pop music. The name Marsheaux is derived from the first two syllables of the names of the band members.
history
Marsheaux gained national recognition in Greece with their debut single, a cover version of Gershon Kingsley's popcorn . The single was widely played on Greek and continental European radio. With their two remixes for the in-vox duet with Andy Bell from Erasure , Will I Ever , they achieved further international recognition in 2004.
Currently signed to Undo Records, Marsheaux released their first studio album, Ebay Queen, in 2004 . The album plays heavily on Marsheaux's self-conceded influence from The Human League , Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark and Depeche Mode . A key element in Marsheaux is that both musicians sing almost exclusively in English , which enables sales in the UK and USA. Ebay Queen received favorable international reviews.
Both musicians are not only singers, but also accomplished instrumentalists on the synthesizer. Marianthi plays microKORG , Minimoog , Roland SH101 and Yamaha CS01, Sophie plays microKORG, Korg MS-10 , Roland alpha-Juno2 , Akai AX80 and Roland CR-78 .
In December 2006, Undo Records released Marsheaux's second album, Peekaboo , which sells worldwide, but mainly in Greece, the US and the UK. Electronically Yours rated it 2007 Album of the Year.
In 2009 the third album Lumineux Noir was released . It contains some much darker tracks than the previous albums and has been compared by Sonic Seducer to the music of Chemical Brothers , Client and Ladytron .
In addition to their own compositions, Marsheaux specialize in remixing and rewriting existing pieces by artists such as Moby , Katy Perry , Kylie Minogue , Gwen Stefani , etc. After the duo had already produced a cover version of the second Depeche Mode single in 2005 with New Life , the musicians released A Broken Frame , a reinterpretation of the entire album of the same name by the British synthpop band in January 2015 . An MP3 version of the album with maxi versions of all tracks was released in the same year as An Extended Broken Frame ; later a double CD with both versions was released.
Both band members have regular guest appearances as DJanes in Athens and now also in other European cities.
