The Other is a horror punk music group from North Rhine-Westphalia founded in 2002 . The Other are considered the best known representatives of the horror punk genre in Europe. The band name refers to "The Stranger" or "The Unknown" and comes from literary studies and psychology (see for example Unheimlich ).

Band history

The band was founded in 2002 in Leichlingen . Rod Usher, Sarge von Rock, Dr. Caligari and Andy Only are active as a Misfits association under the name Ghouls . Before that, singer Rod Usher was guitarist in the sludge band Forced to Decay . The Other were able to quickly make a name for themselves in the punk and death rock scene with their scary outfits and the right attitude, inspired by old B-horror films .

After the release of their debut album They're Alive! The band played as the opening act for Misfits, Wednesday 13, Balzac and The 69 Eyes . In 2006 the second album We Are Who We Eat was released , and consolidated the band's status. Two Germany tours and concerts with Bela B. , Wednesday 13, the Meteors , The Cult , The Damned , The Bones and other popular bands followed. The first line-up change at The Other took place in December 2006, when bassist and founding member Andy Only left. The band's former roadie , Migore Drake, switched to bass as a permanent member.

In January 2007 The Other were on tour in the USA for the first time. In September 2007, the band's first comic, “Tales of The Other”, was published by Weissblech-Verlag and deals with the story of the characters embodied by the band members. This comic comes from the author and draftsman Levin Kurio and the draftsman Rainer F. Engel. Furthermore, the band's first music video was shot in 2007, with the participation of then porn actress Leonie Saint .

With The Place to Bleed , The Other released the third album in May 2008 , which was musically heavier than the previous albums. Afterwards the band could also be seen at big festivals like the M'era Luna Festival or Wave-Gotik-Treffen , and they recorded a tour with their former label colleagues Blitzkid . In 2009 The Other announced a limited hiatus from live to work on material for the fourth album and the second part of their comic. Nevertheless, some festival gigs for open airs such as Amphi Festival , Summer Breeze , Force Attack , Endless Summer Open Air and others have been confirmed. In addition, cover songs were created for “Like the 309” by Johnny Cash and the Damned classic “Love Song”.

In 2010 The Other left the Fiend Force Records label , launched by singer Thorsten Wilms in 2003 as a pure horror punk label and home for their own band, and signed with SPV . The fourth album, "New Blood", was released on May 21, 2010 in Europe and on August 31, 2010 in North America, and again received favorable reviews from the music press. For the first time, The Other were able to accompany Alice Cooper , who, according to singer Rod Usher, had a great influence on the band's music. The Other also appeared as the first horror punk band in August 2010 at the Wacken Open Air .

In December of the same year bassist Migore Drake left the band due to scheduling conflicts. The new bass player and background singer was Viktor Sharp, who, like his two predecessors, came from the band. In 2011 the band was accompanied by the documentary magazine Planetopia of the German broadcaster Sat.1 during the Wave-Gotik-Treffen . The show presented the horror punk scene and showed excerpts from everyday life in the band. In 2011 the fourth part of the splatter series “Violent Shit” by underground director Andreas Schnaas was released , in which The Other acted as guest stars.

From March to April 2012 the band went back to the studio to work on new material. The new album The Devils You Know was released on June 15, 2012, the first single from it was Puppet on a String . At the same time as the new album, the band's second comic, Der Fluch des Kultes , by draughtsman Black was published by Panini Comics .

On October 31, 2012, the band celebrated their 10th anniversary at the final concert of the Hellnights tour, together with Blitzkid and the Bloodsucking Zombies from Outer Space . In May 2013, guitarist and founding member Sarge von Rock left the band. Since the exit was known since the beginning of the year, two new guitarists, Ben Crowe and Jack Saw, were accepted into the band, who played their first concert with the band as the day's headliner at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig. In 2014 bassist Viktor Sharp and new guitarist Jack Saw left the band to pursue their own projects in other musical directions, and were replaced by Aaron Torn on bass and Pat Laveau on guitar.

For the release of the new album Fear Itself in June 2015, Rod Usher stated in interviews that this phase of the band was the most difficult in their history and that the remaining founding members Usher and Caligari were considering breaking up the band. Instead, they dared a fresh start with Fear Itself . The new album was presented at festivals and in October 2015 completed a tour with Christian Death , Nim Vind , and Argyle Goolsby and the Roving Midnight . In November, a headlining tour through England followed, among others together with Al B. Damned as support. After a few isolated appearances in early 2016, the second US tour followed in March, which took the band through seven states in the southwest of the USA. On this tour the band played among other things in the legendary Whiskey a Go Go in West Hollywood . At the end of June 2016, Aaron Torn left the band to pursue other musical paths. Chris Cranium took his place. On September 19, 2016, the band announced on their Facebook page that they had started work on a 7th studio album.

On October 20, 2017, the album Casket Case was released, which is also available as a special edition in a coffin box. Then the tour went straight through Germany, which ended on October 31, 2017 in the Live Music Hall in Cologne.

The unplugged concert on February 9, 2019 in Düsseldorf was the last appearance with Chris Cranium. Aaron Torn has been back on bass since the TV concert in Bielefeld on February 23, 2019.
