Nim Vind is a Canadian horror punk band founded in 2005 by Chris Kirkham. According to him, Nim Vind offers “music for outsiders ” as well as “ sophistic horror punk at its best ” ( Sophistical Horror Punk as its best ). Although Kirkham always emphasizes that he does not want to submit to genre conventions, Nim Vind developed into one of the most popular bands in the genre.
history
In 1998 Chris Kirkham founded the band Mr. Underhill, which his brothers Robbie and Anthony Kirkham joined a year later. The musical goal was to combine the gloomy and melancholy style of the Bauhaus group with the catchy, brisk sounds of the Misfits . After two EPs and an initially unreleased album, the band broke up in 2003. Robbie Kirkham then formed the alternative rock band The Vincent Black Shadow, while Chris Kirkham Nim Vind brought into being what was originally planned as a solo project. Nevertheless, the three brothers remained connected and each played in both bands, even though they took completely different musical paths.
The band name, which Kirkham also uses as an artist pseudonym, is said to mean "freedom through madness ". Also in the sense that a “crazy person ” is treated with more indulgence and thus has more personal freedom. Nim refers to the acronym of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), a large US research center for mental disorders. Vind is derived from the English term vindication , in German justification .
In 2005 the first Nim Vind album was released, which was released by the German label Fiendforce Records . The Ox-Fanzine described it as “convincing” and praised the fact that it “does without the (...) clichés that are unfortunately often found in this genre”. This album was followed in 2009 by The Stillness Illness . While the predecessor received very benevolent reviews, this more trendy successor split the critics. On the Powermetal.de site it was panned as “more or less uninteresting” and “nice, but rarely demanding album”. The Ox-Fanzine, on the other hand, said that the first title Killing Saturday Night already shows why one has to love Nim Vind, who is an “exceptional artist” “in every way”. The music site metal.de saw it as a “fantastic, unconventional piece of music”. To pick out individual songs "is almost impossible and not necessary", since "only the totality of this work reveals the genius of this work". Other reviews also fluctuated between enthusiasm and total rejection.
Also in 2009, Nim Vind made an appearance at the Summer Breeze Open Air in front of around 25,000 people. In 2016 Nim Vind played again at Summer Breeze. Other notable festival appearances were at the Fiendfest in Los Angeles, the Ghouls Night Out in New Jersey, and in 2007 and 2011 appearances at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig. On tours and concerts, Nim Vind shared the stage with musicians and bands such as Gary Numan , Tiger Army , Balzac , the Misfits , Steel Panther , Skid Row , Demented Are Go , New Model Army , The Other or Blitzkid .
The World Through X-Ray Eyes was released in 2013 as a split LP with Mr. Underhill, presenting the previously unreleased album of the previous band. Saturday Night Seance Songs , the third regular studio album by Nim Vind, was released in October 2014, again met with positive press coverage. The US magazine Rue Morgue , the world's highest-circulation horror magazine, named it album of the year. The remix of the song Astronomicon , which was created by Todd Rundgren , also attracted attention .
