Frank the Baptist is an American postpunk , indie and death rock band from San Diego , California , which was founded in the late 1990s by front man Frank Vollmann .

history

Frank the Baptist are an American band around the frontman Frank Vollmann, which currently also includes Gerrit Hassler (guitar), Julio Cardador (bass) and Salomon Bosse (drums). Their versatile sound contains elements of psychedelia , rock 'n' roll and grunge , Americana and Gothic as well as Batcave and Glamrock .

The band was founded in San Diego in 1997 and gained prominence in the California death rock scene. After she had already released two EPs in 1999 and 2000 in self-distribution, the newly founded Austrian label Strobelight Records became aware of her. The official debut album, Different Degrees of Empty , was released there in 2003 . It received good reviews. Thomas Thyssen referred to the record in Sonic Seducer magazine as a "hammer disk ".

In 2004 the second album Beggars Would Ride followed . On this occasion, the band undertook their first European tour. In May 2005 the band played at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen music festival .

Frank Vollmann moved to Berlin in 2006, where he teamed up with Fez Wrecker ( Bonniwell Music Machine , The Fuzztones ) and Benn Ra ( Hatesex , Diva Destruction ), who had both worked on the Frank the Baptist project from 1997-1998. The Berlin Phanthomas completed the new line-up as drummer, which gave their first concert in 2006 in the Leipzig villa .

In November 2006 the band recorded the third album The New Colossus in the Wong studio in Berlin-Kreuzberg , which was released in 2007. From 2008 Justin Stephens (instead of Benn Ra) was the band's bassist.

After further changes in the line-up and six years without a release, the long player As the Camp Burns was released on April 20, 2015 with eleven new songs, which in contrast to the earlier albums have more rock elements.

Frank the Baptist performed with bands like Chameleons Vox , In Extremo and Clan of Xymox . They contributed tracks to various compilations such as Pagan Love Songs 1–3 and New Dark Age 1–4.
