The Dreadful Shadows were a German rock / metal band that was founded in Berlin in 1993 . Initially still settled in the Gothic-Rock and Dark-Wave environment, the music already developed on the debut album through the increased use of metal elements and contemporary electronics in a much harder direction, whereby the band is sometimes also called Gothic Metal - Band was categorized. In the meantime, however, the band is considered an early representative of Dark Rock . In 2000, the Dreadful Shadows disbanded. However, they have recurred occasionally since 2007.

history

Sven Friedrich

In 1993 Sven Friedrich , Reiko Jeschke, Frank Hofer, Jens Riediger and Ron Thiele founded the band Dreadful Shadows in Berlin and recorded their first demo tape, with which the band was able to get a record deal with the Sounds of Delight label in September of the same year . In the same year guitarist Jeschke was replaced by Stefan Neubauer, followed by several appearances in Germany, England and Denmark.

In December work began on the first album Estrangement , which was then released in April 1994. Following this, the Dreadful Shadows went on a European tour (with Love Like Blood , Nosferatu , The Eternal Afflict , among others ), through which they were able to make a name for themselves in countries like the Netherlands, England and Denmark.

Several sampler contributions followed between 1994 and 1995, further concerts and festival appearances (including with Christian Death , Armageddon Dildos and The Eternal Afflict at the Zillo Festival in December 1994) helped the Dreadful Shadows to become more popular within Germany.

In February 1995, the band went back to the studio to record the second release, Homeless EP , which was released in June 1995. The cover version of the New Order classic True Faith included on it was able to establish itself as a dance hit in some clubs. The band then completed a tour with Cyan Kills E. Coli , and at the Mise Noire Festival in Madrid, the Dreadful Shadows could be admired together with Mephisto Walz and Girls Under Glass . In December 1995, the band separated from the Sounds Of Delight label . A new contract partner was found in Deathwish Office , the band's own label of Love Like Blood .

In March 1996, work began on the second long player Buried Again . During the recording, the two guitarists Stefan Neubauer and Frank Hofer left the Dreadful Shadows due to problems within the band. Sven Friedrich and his friend Tom Tony took care of the guitar parts. In July 1996 a replacement was found in André Feller and temporarily in Sebastian Oliver Lange ( In Extremo ) as the second guitarist. The latter was replaced in the long term by Norman Selbig. This was followed by an appearance at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen , then the release of the album Buried Again and an extensive tour of Germany and Europe (including an appearance at the Sacrosanct Festival in London with bands like Rosetta Stone and Vendemmian in August 1996).

1997 moved Dreadful Shadows to the record company Oblivion, the single Burning The Shrouds appeared. With Beyond The Maze , the third studio album was released in February 1998. The promo tour takes the band to Beirut / Lebanon, among other places . The conclusion of this successful year for the band was the release of the Tanita Tikaram cover Twist In My Sobriety .

The Dreadful Shadows once again demonstrated their qualities as a live band in 1999 during an extensive European tour. Shortly before that, they released their last studio album, The Cycle , on which Gitane Demone assisted with numerous songs. The farewell tour took place in 2000, the last show in the Kesselhaus in the Kulturbrauerei , Berlin, was released on CD at the end of the year under the title Apology .

In 2007 and 2008 there were several concerts in the last lineup. However, these are special performances, not a re-union of the band.

At the end of 2011, the reunion of the band was announced.

In late 2012, the band went back to the studio and a tour "Old Shades On New Walls" was announced. This was canceled shortly afterwards "for private reasons of a band member". A single concert on the tour (February 15, 2013 in Berlin, Kesselhaus) was retained alongside two fan club gigs, at which 3 new songs were presented. After that it was also very quiet about the studio activities. As announced in mid-May 2013, there were a number of new live performances as co-headliners of Zeromancer in late autumn to replace the canceled tour .

In the middle of 2014 André Feller suddenly announced his and Sven's exit from the band on his Facebook page. Sven Friedrich later justified the end of the band in interviews with the fact that he could no longer identify with this type of music and would rather devote himself entirely to his new projects. The band's breakup has never been officially confirmed by the band to date.
