Gitane Demone (born May 16, 1958 in San Francisco , California ) is an American musician (keyboard, vocals). Demone's roots are in punk and gothic rock, further influences can be found in jazz and singers like Billie Holiday . In the 1980s Demone was a member of the bands Pompeii 99 and Christian Death , and since then she has worked more or less as a solo artist. She has always caused a stir not only with her music, but also with her appearance, based on S&M fashion, which brought her comparisons with Madonna , as her naughty “cousin” from the underground.

Pompeii 99 and Christian Death

Demone came to Pompeii 99 through a request from band leader Valor Kand . The two became lovers and Demone gave birth to their son Sevan in 1984. A little later, Pompeii 99 merged with Christian Death , whose member Demone remained until 1989, the year they separated from Valor.

Further career

Gitane began her solo career with a number of EPs . In the 1990s she toured with her old bandmate Rozz Williams of Christian Death. Together they recorded an album with cover versions in 1995. Under the project name Demonix she played an album with Mark Ickx from the Belgian band A Split-Second . In 1997 she recorded the album Am I Wrong under her own name . As a singer, she has appeared in American and European bands. She also released a compilation of the songs she sang with Christian Death. In 1999, a second solo album, Stars of Trash, followed in collaboration with the band Dreadful Shadows . Since 2006 she has played with her daughter Zara Kand in the band The Crystelles .

The double DVD Life after Death offers a cross-section of her career, including a recording of a performance with Rozz Williams.
