Thanateros is a German folk metal - gothic - wave band with Irish-Celtic influences, founded in 1999 . Especially at the beginning, Thanateros made use of pagan motifs, for example from Celtic mythology and shamanism . The band name Thanateros is composed of the names of the Greek deities for death ( Thanatos ) and covetous love ( Eros ). According to his own statements, he refers to the Chaos-Magical Order of the "Illuminati of Thanateros".
history
2000-2010
Thanateros was founded in 1999 as a solo project by Ben Richter, after he left the dark metal band Evereve. In 2000 he put together the first line-up. After the debut album The First Rite in 2001, a support tour with In Extremo followed . In 2002 there were individual concerts and festival appearances.
In 2003 the second album Circle of Life was released , which was produced by guitarist Jens Busch and in which traditional instruments emphasized the Irish-Celtic folk aspect more. The release of Circle of Life was combined with the first headlining club tour through Germany and Austria. Festival appearances followed in the summer and autumn of that year. a. with bands like Subway to Sally , Last Instance , Tanzwut , L'Âme Immortelle and Schandmaul .
In 2005, Into the Otherworld, the third Thanateros album, also produced by Jens Busch, was released. This contained the by The Pogues have become known classic Dirty Old Town , the first single, whose video clip of Dietrich Brüggemann ( Oomph! , Rammstein ) was produced. This was followed by tours with Umbra et Imago and the Fields of the Nephilim follow-up band NFD, as well as various headliner concerts and festival appearances (including with Saltatio Mortis , Subway to Sally, ASP , Clan of Xymox ).
In 2008 the band produced the fourth album Liber Lux , which was released on April 3, 2009 with a new line-up . Further festival appearances followed, among others with Fiddler's Green , Tristania , Pothead and Finntroll . Despite the success, Ben Richter broke up the band in early 2010.
From 2019
After Ben Richter had released two albums ( Raum / Zeit and Weltenbrand ) with the German metal band Phosphor, which he founded in 2015 , he decided to revive Thanateros in 2018. Together with Phosphor guitarist Chris Lang, he created a new line-up in early 2019. September 2019 a new album was released with the title Insomnia . Although the new line-up also includes a violinist, the Irish folk part has taken a back seat; the musical focus should be more on a dense atmosphere.
