Life

The daughter of the physicist Hans Fesefeldt and von Ilse Hoffmann first studied history and Latin philology in Göttingen and received her doctorate in 1957 with a study on the English state theorist Henry de Bracton . In addition to studies on the history of Lower Saxony, she published numerous reviews and essays, such as for the Chronik Göttingen: Geschichte einer Universitätsstadt , to which she contributed the section on the history of the city under British military administration 1945–1947.

Wiebke von Thadden, who lives as a freelance writer in Göttingen, became known to a wide readership through her historical youth novels . In her novels she deals with the time of Charlemagne , the Ottonians ( Tiza in the king's spell ), the Staufer ( Philip between emperor and king ) and the printing press ( Thomas and the black art ). In her work A Daughter Is Not a Son , published in 2000 , she also portrayed the story of girls from antiquity to the 19th century, thus making a contribution to prejudice research that has since been translated into numerous languages, including Greek, Latvian and Spanish.

Since 1958 she was married to the historian Rudolf von Thadden († 2015). Her daughter Elisabeth von Thadden (* 1961) also works as a writer and editor of the weekly newspaper Die Zeit . Her son Ernst-Ludwig von Thadden (* 1959) is the rector of the University of Mannheim .
