Ernst-Ludwig von Thadden

Ernst-Ludwig von Thadden (* 1959 in Göttingen ) is a German economist and professor of economics at the University of Mannheim . From 2012 to 2018 he was rector of the University of Mannheim.

Life

Von Thadden received his Abitur at the Max-Planck-Gymnasium Göttingen in 1978 and then studied mathematics and economics at the University of Heidelberg and at the London School of Economics . In 1991 he was part of the "European Doctoral Program in Economics" in the subject Economics at the University of Bonn doctorate . After positions at the University of Basel (Switzerland) and at Stanford University (CA), he was appointed full professor at the University of Lausanne in 1995 . There he was u. a. Research director of the National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) "FinRisk" and head of the doctoral program of the "International Center FAME for Financial Asset Management and Engineering", a forerunner of the Swiss Finance Institute . In 1998/99 von Thadden was Resident Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) in Stanford (CA). In 2002 he held the Bertil Danielson Chair at the Stockholm School of Economics and the University of Gothenburg. In 2004 he accepted a position at the Department of Economics at the University of Mannheim .

Ernst-Ludwig von Thadden is the son of Wiebke and Rudolf von Thadden and the brother of Elisabeth von Thadden . He is married to Monika Abt and has three children, Rebekka, Julia and Jakob.

research

His main research interests are microeconomics and capital market theory as well as financial intermediation . His best-known contributions to capital structure theory are his work with Berglöf on the maturity of debt financing and with Patrick Bolton on the liquidity of blocks of shares. On the question of the political and historical dimensions of corporate control through capital markets, Perotti's work on the political economy of corporate control gained importance. In the theory of banking are u. a. known his work on the maturity of bank loans, the information asymmetry of bank-company relationships and the dynamic modeling of maturity transformation. In addition to these topics, he mainly worked on the newly emerging European bond market in the 2000s and in 2010 published with Berglöf and Roland a widely recognized microeconomic theory of bankruptcy. After 2008, von Thadden increasingly turned to the structural problems of the financial system revealed in the financial crisis of 2007, which he had previously pointed out. In 2014, his theory of the instability of secured credit financing relationships, which he had developed with Martin and Skeie, was published.

Academic responsibility

Von Thadden was editor of the Journal of Financial Intermediation from 2001 to 2004 and was editor-in-chief of the journal from 2004 to 2008. Since 2009 he has been a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . In 2006 he became the founding director of the Graduate School of the Economic and Social Sciences at the University of Mannheim, which he acquired as part of the German Excellence Initiative . In addition to various other positions in international academic self-government, he has been chairman of the board of the European Corporate Governance Research Foundation in Brussels since 2014 and a member of the advisory board of the Journal of Economic Perspectives of the American Economic Association since 2015 . Since 2015 he has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the "European Systemic Risk Board" at the European Central Bank.

Rectorate

Member of the University Council of the University of Mannheim since 2008, von Thadden was elected Rector of the University of Mannheim in October 2012. As rector, he placed particular emphasis on the structural promotion of young academics and worked towards further increasing the international competitiveness of the University of Mannheim, which did very well in international rankings towards the end of his tenure in the social and economic sciences. In 2015 the University of Mannheim was a founding member of the “Alliance of Leading Universities on Migration” (ALUM) together with the London School of Economics, Science Po (Paris) and others. As rector, von Thadden also spoke out on current social and university policy issues. Contributions to the public discussion from this time deal, for example, with the European debt crisis or German university policy. Even before he took office, von Thadden announced that he would only be available for one term as rector of the University of Mannheim. He resigned from this office at the end of his term in October 2018.
