Feuerschwanz is a German medieval rock - and metal - band from the area of Erlangen , founded of 2004.

history

Fire tail at the Feuertal Festival 2012 with two "kitties"

The actual idea for "Medieval Folk Comedy" came to Peter Henrici in 2000. He found a large part of the medieval scene to be too humorless and taboo and decided to found a parody band in the tradition of JBO . The realization of the plans began when Tobias Heindl, the violinist of the folk-rock band Fiddler's Green , heard the first material and was enthusiastic about it. So the two founded the band Feuerschwanz together with bassist Andre Linke. All three gave themselves pseudonyms for the project: "Captain Feuerschwanz" (Henrici), "Walther von der Vögelweide" (Heindl) and "Eysye" (Linke). Henrici's colleagues from Merlons Lichter were also involved as musicians . On May 15, 2004 the band made their debut in Erlangen's Omega. After this concert, however, the young band was already on the brink of collapse. Except for Henrici, Linke and Heindl, the other musicians left the group because they could not identify with the humorous concept.

Just a few weeks after the debut concert, Bastian Brenner ("Richard Hodenherz", flutes and shawms) joined them, and Jan Schindler ("Knappe Latte") sat behind the drums; later he switched to bass . In the following time, the band played not only appearances at medieval markets but also as the opening act for Fiddler's Green and thus became increasingly well known in the medieval scene. In November 2005 the first album Prima Nocte was released. After the album was released, Tobias Heindl left the band.

In January 2007, Bastian Brenner left Feuerschwanz after having performed as "Cordoban the Playful" at Saltatio Mortis since September 2006 . It was for him that Marina Regulator ("Ronja Hodenherz") joined the band. In June of the same year, the second album was released under the title Met und Miezen , on which former members also appeared as guest musicians. From November 2007 to March 2008 Feuerschwanz was on tour with Saltatio Mortis. In April, a concert at the E-Werk in Erlangen followed, which was finally released in the form of the live CD Dragon Dance - Live in October 2008. In the meantime, guitarist Hans Platz (who was previously active in bands such as Cyrus Dance, Damn Nero or Sushifarm) joined the band under the pseudonym "Hans der Aufrechte".

Founding member Linke left the band in April 2009. The band's fourth studio album, entitled Wunsch ist Wunsch , was released on March 18, 2011 and reached number 95 on the German album charts. This was followed by a tour through Germany and Austria. The fifth studio album, Walhalligalli , was released on August 31, 2012 and entered the German album charts at number 37.

On April 25, 2014 the band gave their 10th anniversary concert at the E-Werk Erlangen, which was sold out after a short time. During the performance "Hauptmann Feuerschwanz" announced that Jan Schindler would leave the band and that "Felix Taugenix" would take his place on bass. On the occasion of the anniversary, Veit “Vito C.” Kutzer ( JBO ), Thomas Lindner ( Schandmaul ) and Tobias Heindl ( Fiddler's Green ) appeared on stage to play some songs together with Feuerschwanz. The concert was recorded and later released on DVD. The band also announced that a new studio album will be released in autumn 2014.

"Hauptmann" and "Hodi" (2015)

In May 2015, the band was unloaded from the Fairytale Festival , organized by the AStA of the University of Osnabrück, in order to prevent "safety-endangering protests". The band had been accused of misogynistic and sexist texts, compromise proposals by the AStA were rejected by autonomous units . The band reacted with incomprehension and indignation and emphasized the satirical aspect of their lyrics. She also spoke of "unbelievable allegations" and a restriction on artistic freedom. Feuerschwanz reserved legal action for character assassination and defamation.

In August 2016, Feuerschwanz released their seventh studio album Sex is Must . The title of the album and individual songs and text passages should be viewed as an answer to the above-mentioned allegations. In December 2017 bassist Felix Taugenix announced that he was leaving the bands Feuerschwanz and dArtagnan . Jarne Hodinsson took his place at the electric bass .

The eighth studio album Methämmer was released in 2018 . As the band's most successful album to date, it reached number 6 in the German charts. In June 2019, the band signed a new recording contract with Napalm Records and celebrated their 15th band anniversary on the Metfest tour in December 2019.

In May 2020, the band released a song with English lyrics for the first time as an advance excerpt from the ninth album Das Elefte Gebot , which was released a little later, with a cover version of I See Fire , which the band also performed in the ZDF television garden . For the release of the album on June 26, 2020, the band organized an open-air concert under the name "11: O: A" at Abenberg Castle , streamed via Youtube , but due to the ban on events due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany there were no spectators present; the concert was financed through a crowdfunding campaign. The Eleventh Commandment was the band's first album, which was also released on record. There is also an extended edition of the album, which contains seven cover versions ("The Seven Deadly Sins") on an additional sound carrier .

style

Feuerschwanz celebrates various topics by reinterpreting not only supposed medieval professions and customs such as Prima Nocte (album title), but also classic fairy tales. The band, who themselves described their style on the earlier albums as "Middle Ages Folk Comedy", but mostly reduced the subject to a trivial, frivolous and hedonistic core message.

Another issue that always finds its way into the lyrics and is also a part of the band motto, the Met : The eponymous piece of the second studio album Met chicks he is also celebrated in the songs of drinking song , Devil gift , Metmaschine , Metnotstand in Wonderland , Metfest or Lords of Powermet . Furthermore, a saga is built around the warrior of the Mets and he is sung about in Methämmer as part of Masonic- like rituals.

In addition to the self-written pieces, Feuerschwanz's repertoire also contains some songs that were originally written by other bands. The well-known Lord of the Winds was parodied by Schandmaul as well as defender of the true nonsense of JBO, who sang fiery tail under the title Defender of the true Mets .

The fire cantata and the bear dance , which are reworking of a traditional medieval melody, are among the few purely instrumental pieces by the band. The lyrics are often crude or even shoddy and were not only positively received by critics.

Another characteristic of the band and their effect are the so-called "kitties". These are women made up and disguised as cat-like creatures who serve as dancers and animators.
