The fire tail fringed slipper ( Epalzeorhynchos bicolor , syn .: Labeo bicolor ), or just called fire tail, is a freshwater fish from the genus Epalzeorhynchos in the family of carp fish (Cyprinidae). Despite its rarity in nature, it is a popular and widespread ornamental fish . Tens of thousands of offspring are exported from Thailand every year.

features

The fire tail fringe slipper is a small carp fish with an elongated body shape, which reaches a maximum total length of 12 centimeters. The mouth is small, barbels are present. Its dorsal fin (dorsal) is somewhat high, the scales small. The body and fins, with the exception of the bright red caudal fin (caudal), are black or black-violet. There is a small spot above the pectoral fins , the edge of the dorsal fin is narrowly lined with white.

The sexes should be distinguishable by the shape of the dorsal fin. In the male, it tapers to a point at the rear, while the rear edge in the female is straight and forms a right angle. In addition, the females are usually stronger and paler than the males.

distribution

The fire tail fringe slipper is endemic to Thailand . It occurs in the lower Mae Nam Mae Klong , in the Mae Nam Chao Phraya and in the Mae Nam Bang Pakong river basin. The fire tail fringed slipper was thought to be extinct in the wild, according to recent information it can be found locally in Mae Nam Chao Phraya. He is reported to have disappeared from Mae Nam Mae Klong and Mae Nam Bang Pakong, but further investigation is needed.

Habitat and way of life

The fire-tailed fringed slipper inhabits rivers with rocky or sandy and gravelly bottoms. Floodplain areas are also sought out. As an omnivore , it eats vegetable food and small benthic creatures.

Aquaristics

The first fire tails were introduced to Germany from the Hamburg Aquarium in 1952 . The albino form of Epalzeorhynchos bicolor is also available in pet shops .

To set up the aquarium: Fine sand should be used as the substrate. There should be hiding places made of root wood and stone structures as well as plenty of free swimming space. It should be planted in such a way that the animals can form territories without having direct visual contact with their neighbors.

For a long time it was believed that fire tails were solitary. Indeed, this fish species that forms territory is prone to aggression. It is now assumed that the fire tail needs conspecifics. In very small groups of two to three animals, it is usually very snappy and intolerant even to other members of its own species. In a group of 5 or more animals there is a balanced power relationship. A sufficiently large tank is a prerequisite for keeping it in an aquarium - the figures range from 250 to 500 liters as a minimum.
