Epalzeorhynchos is a genus from the family of the carp fish (Cyprinidae). The species are only found in Southeast Asia , and some arepopular ornamental fish among aquarists .

features

Dorsal ( dorsal fin ) without hard rays, with 10 to 13 divided soft rays. The lower lip and upper lip are connected with a narrow membrane band (frenulum). In Epalzeorhynchos two pairs of barbels present. The maxillary barbels on the mouth are quite well developed, the tips reach vertically almost to the middle of the eyes. In a pit on the sides of the snout, near the base of the rostral barbels, there are stiff, freely movable skin processes (rostral lobes, also rostral papillae).

Systematics

The genus Epalzeorhynchos was created by Bleeker on the basis of the type species Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus - formerly Barbus kalopterus . Although the genus was clearly defined in the first description , even experienced authors confused the genera Epalzeorhynchos , Crossocheilus (from Greek krossos "fringe", and cheilos "lip") and Labeo , so that species were repeatedly transferred to other genera. In a revision of several genera in 1986 Bănărescu clarified some nomenclature problems and recognized three species as valid. In 1989 Roberts placed four species in the genus. In 1998, Yang and Winterbottom included five species in the genus, including Epalzeorhynchos bicornis . However, they indicated that Epalzeorhynchos bicornis might not belong to the genus. Without further investigation, however, she did not want to make a decision. Until 2006, Epalzeorhynchos bicornis was therefore included in the genus. Because of differences in the position and structure of Rostrallappen described Zhang and Kottelat 2006, a new category called Akrokolioplax and put Epalzeorhynchos bicornis the only way Akrokolioplax bicornis ( Wu , 1977) in this new, monotypic genus.

The genus Epalzeorhynchos thus currently comprises four species:
