The Schönflossige trunk bar ( Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus , Syn. : Epalzeorhynchos kalopterum , Barbus kalopterus ) is a freshwater fish of the genus Epalzeorhynchos in the family of the carp fish (Cyprinidae). The species comes from Southeast Asia and is occasionally kept as an ornamental fish .

features

Nice-finned trunk barbel reach a maximum total length of 16 centimeters. Bănărescu describes the species as follows: The body color is yellowish. A wide, dark, brownish stripe runs along the back and on each side from the eye to the fork of the caudal fin . Half of the dorsal fin and the distal parts of the anal fin and the pelvic fins are dark brownish. The pectoral fins are light grayish.

The sexes of the trunk barbel are indistinguishable with the naked eye. Because of their similar appearance, beautiful-finned trunk barbel are often confused with the Siamese trunk barbel ( Crossocheilus siamensis ).

distribution

On the Malay Peninsula , the beautiful-finned algae occurs in the southern part, in southern Thailand and in Malaysia . From there the distribution area extends over Singapore to Indonesia ( Sumatra and Borneo , maybe Java ). The current distribution is uncertain, however, as the stocks have declined. Many populations have shrunk or even completely disappeared in the last few decades.

The species does not occur in the Mae Nam Chao Phraya and Mekong river basins .

Habitat and way of life

The beautiful-finned trunk barbel lives in rivers and mountain streams. Mostly it can be observed when grazing on sandy or rocky substrates. During the rainy season, it also visits flooded areas and forests, a migratory behavior that is probably disturbed by human influence. The diet consists of worms, crustaceans and vegetable matter.

Aquaristics

They are very robust and keeping them in the aquarium is unproblematic even for beginners; however, breeding is usually only possible for professionals. They are mainly algae eaters , but can also be fed live or dry food. In the aquarium they tend to be in the middle to lower areas. The aquarium should be lushly planted and at the same time offer enough free swimming space. In addition, there should be a medium to strong current, but quiet places for the night's rest should not be missing.
