The Labeoninae , in German also known as fringed lippers , sucking barbs or lip barbs , are a subfamily of the carp fish (Cyprinidae) (now also tribe Labeonini). They occur with 350 to 400 species in the Near East , on the Indian subcontinent , in Southeast Asia west of the Wallace Line (not in the Philippines ) and with the two most species-rich genera Labeo and Garra also in tropical Africa south of the Sahara and in the Nile .

features

The Labeoninae are small to medium-sized carp fish that have an elongated body, often adapted to strong currents, a forked caudal fin and a lower mouth. Among all carp fish, they show the greatest diversity in terms of the morphology of their lips and other structures affecting the mouth, e.g. B. the rostral fold, which covers most of the upper lip. A suction disk can be located behind the lower lip, which enables the fish to attach themselves to solid substrates in strong flowing water. Labeonini species reach a length of three to 90 cm, most of them remain below 20 cm.

Genera

Bangana diplostoma
Siamese algae ( Crossocheilus oblongus )
Rein fringed slippers ( Epalzeorhynchos frenatus )
Labiobarbus fasciatus
Osteochilichthys thomassi
Osteochilus vittatus
Schismatorhynchos heterorhynchos

A total of about 35 genera with 350 to 400 species were assigned to the Labeoninae. Two of the genera Labeo and Garra contain more than half the species.

use

Large Labeoninae species are fished for human consumption, the species of the genus Epalzeorhynchos are popular aquarium fish. The reddish mullet ( Garra rufa ) is used for skin care.
