The green fringed slipper ( Epalzeorhynchos frenatus , syn .: Labeo frenatus , Labeo erythrurus ), also called rein fringed slipper , coral labeo or redfin labeo , is a freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia from the Labeonini tribe in the carp family (Cyprinidae). It is a popular ornamental fish .
features
The green fringe slipper reaches a length of 15 centimeters TL . Its body is greenish brown, the upper half is slightly darker than the lower. A short strip runs from the tip of the snout to the upper rear edge of the gill cover . There is a large black spot at the base of the caudal fin . The dorsal fin (dorsal), anal fin (anal) and pelvic fins (ventral) are red and slightly dusky with a black tinge. The dorsal fin is supported by 10 to 11 split soft rays. On the front of the first gill arch there are 40 to 45 gill spines .
distribution
The green fringed slipper is widespread in southeast Asia. In Thailand it is in the Mae Nam Mae Klong , Mae Nam Chao Phraya and Mekong river basins, in Laos in the Mekong catchment area and in the lower Xe Bangfai , in Cambodia on the lower Mekong at least downstream to Phnom Penh and in the Tonle Sap River and Tonle Sap Lake . Stocks of the green fringed slipper are also reported from Vietnam . However, more information on distribution is needed. It is believed that the population of the species has declined in some parts of its range.
Habitat and way of life
The green fringed slipper can be found near any type of solid surface in medium water depths and at the bottom of rivers and streams. It can also be found in waters with a sandy substrate. During the flood season, it swims in flooded bank areas and forests and returns to the rivers when the water level drops. The food of the green fringed lipper consists of algae , vegetation , phytoplankton and partly zooplankton .
use
The green fringed slipper is a popular aquarium fish, mainly offspring are on the market . Together with other small carp fish, it is fished with small to large equipment.
Aquaristics
The green fringe slipper has a life expectancy of 4 to 6 years and is quite lively. Adult animals form territories that they defend against conspecifics, albeit not as aggressively as the related fire tails . Keeping them together is therefore only possible in large aquariums, in which each animal can form its own territory without constant eye contact. The species likes to be on the pool floor, likes hiding places and prefers rather dim light. Breeding in aquariums seems to have rarely been successful so far.
