Tyranny is a funeral doom band formed in 2001 .

history

Lauri Lindqvist and Matti Mäkelä founded Tyranny after a few years of making music together , after a musical concept had developed. Both were previously involved in joint projects such as Wormphlegm . In addition to the various instruments that both musicians play during the recording, Lindqvist takes on the design and Mäkelä that of production and studio technology. The duo calls in live musicians to perform.

In 2003, the 40-minute long extended play Bleak Vistae was released via Firebox Records as the group's debut. The EP received mostly positive reviews. Due to the use of "ritual rhythm and sacred organ sounds" on the EP, Tyranny was assigned an innovative meaning for the genre. Two years after the EP , the album Tides of Awakening was released via Firedoom Music, a sub-label of Firebox Records that was initiated in 2004 and specialized in Death and Funeral Doom . The concept album, which is dedicated to the Cthulhu myth , received mostly positive reviews and was placed in the tradition of popular funeral bands.

In 2010 Mäkelä stated that he had temporarily distanced himself from Funeral Doom after he felt that the genre had become too popular and ran the risk of losing its creative potential. Nevertheless, he already granted the option of another album in this conversation. Aeon's second studio album in Tectonic Interment was released five years after this interview via Dark Descent Records . The album, again based on HP Lovecraft , was, unlike its predecessor, judged as a mediocre and lacking in ideas work.

style

Tyranny's music is mostly attributed to Funeral Doom. Mäkelä names Burzum , Esoteric , Hierophant and Dusk as influences . According to the style, the group is compared in reviews with the initiators of the genre Thergothon and Skepticism as well as with other popular genre representatives such as Pantheist , Esoteric and Until Death Overtakes Me .

The description of the music also corresponds to the style-typical characteristics of Funeral Doom. On Metal.de, the music on the album Tides of Awakening is described as "[b] ominous, faded growls, repetitive guitar riffs creeping on the abyss, keyboard surface sounds in the background, and the drums, which provide the barely perceptible rhythm every minute." . The music on Metal-District.de is portrayed in a similar way. So there extremely dragging rhythms before deadly sad guitar melodies about which deepest deathy vocals rumble with the sound carpet of an organ generated by the keyboard are identified as dragging and hyper-heavy song construct .
