Time signature

Specification of the ¾ cycle

The time signature is at the beginning of a piece of music after the clef and possible accidentals and indicates the time signature of the piece. In contrast to the accidentals, the time signature - as long as the time signature does not change - only appears in the first staff and is not repeated.

It is usually written as a mathematical fraction with numerator and denominator, but without a fraction line. The denominator determines which note value corresponds to a counting time . The counter shows the number of beats per measure. The earlier mensural are the ways of writing 4/4 timefor the 4 / 4 -Stroke ( alla semibreve ) and alla brevethe 2 / 2 -Stroke ( alla breve ) are common.
