backgrounds

When Skrillex's EP More Monsters and Sprites and the album received mixed reviews, critics were skeptical when the first single from the album, First of the Year (Equinox), was released. The single, with influences from electro house and dubstep , which also contains parts from other songs by Skrillex such as Fucking Die 1 or Rude Boy Bass (the demo version of Make It Bun Dem ), however, became successful and usually received positive reviews.

Music video

On August 10, 2011, the music video, which was shot by Tony Truand, was first released on iTunes . It was a candidate for "Best Short Form Music Video" at the 2012 Grammy Awards . On August 17th of this year, it was also put on the official Skrillex YouTube channel . In just a few months, the video was viewed more than 45 million times. In this one we see a pedophile man sitting on a bench next to a playground as he watches a girl walking down the street. He runs after her. Suddenly the girl goes down a flight of stairs into a cellar, whereupon the man continues to follow her. She is standing against a wall with a phone in hand. When the pedophile gets closer to her, she shouts “Call 911 now!” And you can see that she is a “Black Eyed Kid”. She then drops the phone, creating a shock wave. The girl uses the telekinesis of the "Black Eyed Kids" so that the pedophile is tossed back and forth. The man falls into a kind of trance and reaches for dolls that he sees in his mind before he wakes up again, puts on his glasses, takes out his cell phone and calls out “Call 911 now!”. A figure known as the "Black Creature" appears behind the girl and the man is again thrown in all directions and pressed against a wall. At the end of the video, the girl stands in front of a large tally sheet and adds another line.

criticism

"It's one thing to empathize with at-risk kids, or to speak up for them generally, but Skrillex takes it a step further - and then further still - in this stunning new video for the track" First of the Year (Equinox) " . [...] But in this clip, the song's melodic preamble also serves as an ominous backdrop for a creepy, would-be predator who's lurking outside a playground where young children are frolicking. The day is overcast, but something much darker is in the air, as a little girl leaves and the man stalks after her. When she unexpectedly skips off to a dark, abandoned warehouse, he continues to follow, eventually entering a room where she's standing alone, holding a telephone receiver. The keyboards suddenly fade into a glitchier groove, and then, at the 1:25 mark, well, you gotta see for yourself. "

“It's one thing to empathize with or stand up for children at risk, but Skrillex takes it one step further - and then even further - in this stunning new video for First of the Year (Equinox). [...] But in this film, the musical introduction serves as the ominous background for a creepy, budding sex criminal who lurks in front of a playground with romping children. It's cloudy, but something much darker is in the air when a little girl leaves [the playground] and the attacker chases after her. When she surprisingly enters a dark, abandoned warehouse, he follows her further and finally enters a room where she stands alone with a telephone receiver. The music fades [in strength] and finally, at 1:25 minute, well, you have to see it for yourself. "
