Amy Davidson of Digital Spy said the song is a "thundering love song that affirms that Charli XCX is a gifted pop star."

Boom Clap reached the top 10 of the single charts in both Great Britain and the United States and is Charli XCX's first international chart success as a solo artist. Before that, she reached number 1 on the British singles chart with Icona Pop and the song I Love It and, in collaboration with Iggy Azalea, topped the Billboard Hot 100 on the song Fancy . Boom Clap reached other top 10 placements in Australia, Canada and New Zealand . The song earned a silver record for over 200,000 copies sold in the UK and two platinum records for over 2 million copies sold in the United States.
