Dome Karukoski (born December 29, 1976 in Nicosia , Cyprus ) is an award-winning Finnish film director , screenwriter , actor and film producer of Cypriot origin who became internationally known for films such as Heroes of the Arctic Circle and cinematic artist biographies such as Tom of Finland and Tolkien .

Life

Dome Karukoski, born in Cyprus in 1976, is the son of a Finnish mother, Ritva Karukoski, who works as a journalist, and of the American actor George Dickerson . When Dome Karukoski was five years old, the family moved from Cyprus to Finland. Karukoski grew up multilingual. In 1999 he was selected as one of three students at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki to specialize in directing.

Since 2003, Dome Karukoski has worked in the film business in various functions, including film director, screenwriter or producer: occasionally he also works as an actor. At the beginning of his career he made short films such as Verenperintö and Käytösrangaistus , and since 2005 he has also worked for the big screen. After his cinema debut The Girl and the Rapper , he shot another drama with The Home of Dark Butterflies . In 2010 Karukoski then directed the romantic comedy Heroes of the Arctic Circle . Another comedic drama appeared in 2014, Coffee with Milk and Stress . In 2017 he won the FIPRESCI Prize for his film Tom of Finland at the Gothenburg International Film Festival .

On May 3, 2019, his drama Tolkien with Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins premiered in cinemas in Finland.
