action
Prologue : A narrator tells the story of the "Baumel tree" near a remote village in Lapland from the off. There, for generations, the male residents have hanged themselves on the occasion of a wide variety of life crises that are typical of Finnish Lapland. These crises are shown in brief reviews and all end at the "Baumel-Baum". He isolates the cases and their fates.
The lost day : Inari puts a 50 euro note next to her bed on Friday morning for her jobless and uninspired friend Janne. He is supposed to buy a digital receiver because the next day in Finnish Lapland the analog TV will be switched off and she wants to watch the film Titanic on the weekend . Janne spends the afternoon with his friends Kalle and Ralle in a bar, where he tries to reach a higher and higher level on a slot machine in order to unlock a topless picture of an attractive woman, which beckons as a reward. However, he does not manage to reach the last level. He not only forgets the closing times, but also pays his beer bill with the 50 euro note.
The ultimatum : At home, Inari gives him an ultimatum that he must have bought a digital receiver by 9 a.m. on Saturday, otherwise she would leave him. As a precaution, she is already packing her things. Meanwhile, Janne tries to get his parents' device to their device, but fails because a non-removable sticker would give him away. He then contacts his father-in-law Martti Juntura, who lives in Rovaniemi and runs an electronics store there, and announces his visit. Together with his two friends, he sets out for Rovaniemi, almost 200 kilometers away; Janne wants to find the missing money on the way.
The night begins : In the yellow Ford Sierra "TIS-51", which Ralle took without his mother's permission, the three friends set out and after a short drive they get stuck because of a lack of petrol. Nearby is the van owned by small business owner Pikku-Mikko, a former admirer of Inari. When the trio wants to drain gasoline from the car, they are surprised by the armed Pikku-Mikko, who strangely invites the three to his impressive house. Pikku-Mikko offers Janne a used digital receiver that is only four weeks old, but Janne proudly rejects it. He eagerly accepts Kalle and Ralle's suggestions that Inari wants to part ways with Janne. He then recommends a hotel to the three men and supplies them with a spare can of gasoline.
The hotel : In the hotel, Janne has the opportunity to do a job for the overwhelmed Swedish receptionist Anna, for which he receives 50 euros. At the same time, Ralle and Kalle are in the dance hall at the bar, while Kalle frightens a Finnish colleague who is interested in him, while Ralle meets the attractive Marjukka there, in whom he thinks he recognizes the woman from the slot machine. When he asks her for an autograph, she feels flattered and tells him that the pictures were taken in Berlin a long time ago. Marjukka openly tries to get Ralle and even shows him a picture of her child. He then gets advice from his dominant mother via picture contact, but she advises him against, whereupon Ralle tries to escape through the toilet window. Janne, who has been forced into the pool by several women, is rescued from the water by Kalle. The duo then finds out that Ralle is stuck in the toilet window and has to sacrifice 50 euros to free it. Now again without money, the friends flee into the cold polar night .
The police check : The trio ends up in a police check where the police officers secure the car keys. Thanks to a second key, however, the journey continues; the vehicle overturns shortly afterwards and remains on the roof. After the three of them have had another beer in a restaurant on Landstrasse, there is a fight with three drunk people in a parking lot. However, they then manage to get the Ford back on the road and continue the journey.
The Russians : On their drive, the three men pass four perplexed Russians who have hit a reindeer in a Porsche Cayenne . Janne offers them the traditional Finnish way of preparing the animal for 200 euros. In front of the vacation home of the apparently very wealthy Russians, Janne tries to dismantle the animal and causes a bloodbath because the animal was not yet dead, while the two Russian men shoot targets with paintball rifles. Finally they manage to prepare the meat of the animal. When the Russian who spoke the word wanted to give Janne some money and put his wallet in his hand, his friend interpreted it as theft, so that Janne and his two friends flee with a Russian snowmobile, followed by the suspicious Russian with his rifle. On the run, Janne loses his wallet with his ID, which the pursuer finds in the snow and takes away.
The snowstorm : All of a sudden the snowmobile stops on a frozen lake; an already predicted blizzard is coming. Janne, Ralle and Kalle are snowed in. When the storm is over, the three of them drive back to the Russians' holiday home and leave behind their borrowed, blood-smeared and paintballed clothing. Then they continue their journey in their car. While the snow storm is still raging, Inari packs her last things into Pikku-Mikko's van. A descent is impossible because of the weather. Pikku-Mikko stays with Inari, who puts the intrusive man off for the morning because she has promised Janne to wait until then.
Rovaniemi : Ralle leaves Janne and Kalle at an intersection and goes to the hotel to see Marjukka again. There he makes it to her room, although the receptionist beats him with a stun gun. Janne has decided to offer his services for cleaning the windshield at a traffic light in order to get the 50 euros. Since no car stops, Kalle helps him manipulate the traffic light. When a taxi stops, however, the water in the bucket is frozen. Here, too, there is another incident that backfires. The friends then bring the money together through Janne's next business idea. Janne's father-in-law Martti then sells him a very good digital receiver with special functions.
Back in the village : Janne finds his rival Pikku-Mikko in Inari's bed, but she didn't even notice that he crawled to her. Frustrated, Janne then crushes the new digital receiver on the street in front of the house. Inari clarifies the situation, Janne believes her and Pikku-Mikko leaves. Inari tells Janne about her pregnancy and the resulting insecurity. Janne immediately makes plans for the children's room. Suddenly a helicopter flies over the house and lands shortly afterwards. The rich Russian gets out and hands Janne the top model of a digital receiver and his lost ID card before the helicopter takes off again.
Epilogue : Ralle has evidently withdrawn from his mother's influence and is in Marjukka's hotel room. She takes off her blouse for him to show him what the slot machine has so far withheld. Kalle cuts the bare "dangling tree" in a picturesque winter landscape with an ax.

criticism
“But Karukoski won't let his characters give up. With warmth and humor he shows them how to get out of this misery, without magic, only through their own will. A little bit of hope in the middle of the loneliness of the gray, dreary everyday winter life. "
“If Aki Kaurismäki were to make British-inspired underdog comedies, the result would be something similar to the arctic road movie 'Heroes of the Arctic Circle'. [...] The fine art of failure is seldom told in such a humorous and exhilarating way in the cinema. Conclusion: pitch black Finnish road movie with bone-dry dialogues and lots of grotesque situation comedy "
“A road movie narrated laconically and comically, occasionally touching tragic moments odyssey through snow and darkness, characterized by skilful timing, slapstick and dialog jokes. The film is also about the mentality and life of people beyond the Arctic Circle. "
A star reviewer wrote: "A wonderful loser comedy" and Die Welt said: "To laugh at." TV Spielfilm said: "The high art of failure is seldom told so humorous and exhilarating in the cinema." Blickpunkt: Film looked similar and wrote: “Lively slacker road movie with the punch lines and timing right.” Programmkino.de wrote that the film was “crazy, turbulent and really funny”.
Josef Engels from Welt N24 wrote that it was "a very Finnish film"; he has "about as much in common with the recklessness of American road movies à la Todd Philipps as Lapland has with Florida". In conclusion he wrote: "And so 'Heroes of the Arctic Circle' unfolds a kind of therapeutic effect: The burned-out Central Europeans can take an example from these unabashed Finns."
