Eric Bogosian (born April 24, 1953 in Woburn , Massachusetts ) is an American actor , playwright and screenwriter of Armenian descent , best known for his play Talk Radio, which was filmed by Oliver Stone .

life and work

Bogosian's mostly cynical comedies are one-person pieces that can be performed by ensembles. A microphone and a folding chair are the only tools the lead actor needs in their performances to portray a range of different characters. For these pieces, which he initially wrote for himself, Bogosian won three Obie Awards , a Drama Desk Award and a Pulitzer Prize nomination for Talk Radio .

Bogosian adapted Talk Radio himself for the film adaptation by Oliver Stone and also played the leading role. He was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award , received the Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Most Promising Actor and received a Silver Bear at the 1989 Berlin Film Festival .

Bogosian appears repeatedly, mostly as a prominent supporting actor, in feature films, where he specializes in unconventional characters. From 2006 to 2010 he was a member of the American television series Criminal Intent .

Bogosian's 2000 debut novel Mall was filmed by Joseph Hahn in 2014, starring Peter Stormare , Vincent D'Onofrio and Gina Gershon . For Hahn, known as the DJ for the rock band Linkin Park , it was the feature film debut as a director.

Theater theory

In the foreword to his collected theater pieces, Bogosian explains his conception of the meaning and purpose of theater, which is partly reminiscent of Bertolt Brecht's theory of epic theater:

“I want theater to wake me up, not for it to lull me and make me sleepy. My theater has nothing to do with fantasy, nothing to do with seduction. My theater is not a film script. It's not a stage sitcom . I want my theater to be an event. I want to cross borders, bite the hand that feeds me, bang heads. "
