It was written by Taylor Swift, Sam Dew and Jack Antonoff and recorded by Zayn and Taylor Swift for the American film Fifty Shades of Gray . The song was released as a single on December 9, 2016, two months before the film was released.

The song debuted at number 6 on the American Billboard Hot 100 charts in the week of December 31, 2016. Two months later, in the week of March 4, 2017, it peaked at number 2.

On June 14, 2017, the single was certified triple platinum for 3 million copies sold in the United States. It was awarded Quadruple Platinum on June 14, 2018.
